...... ARGH!
Recently decided to donate £5 a month to a childrens charity (not the NSPCC as I've heard horror stories about them), and set up a DD to start in September, and signed the GiftAid box (You know, doing my bit etc)
Anyway, got a thank you letter the other day, and in it they are asking if I'd consider increasing my donation to £6 a month?
Hang on a bloody minute! You've not even started my monthly donations yet, and already, you are on the want for more! And where does it stop? In a few months £8? then £10? £12? £15?
I cancelled the DD, and if they ring me, I'll tell 'em why.
Cheeky bar-stewards!!! At least be bloody grateful that I chose them to donate a fiver a month to, and at least leave it a few months before writing to ask for a bit more!!! Even before I have started is just not on.

I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Once you are know to a charity they will keep asking for more as it's a well known fact that if you've given once you are more likely to give again (I work for a charity). It costs the charity less to ask you that it does to ask people who are not known to them, so they are using your donation wisely.
Just ask them to remove you from their mailing list or return their post to you un-opened and marked 'no longer at this address'.Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -
We stick to the local charities, St Michaels Hospice, Salvation Army etc.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

I do payroll giving through the Charities Trust ... my employer takes £8 off my wages but the charity gets £10. Like with Peter, I give to a smaller, less well known charity which is grateful for my donation. They never chase me up for more ... but we send them little extra amounts when our own cash flow allows it, we've even sent them books of stamps to ease their admin burden a little bit.I no longer contribute to the Benefits & Tax Credits forum.0

I donate to several charities by regular DD, but have put it in writing at the start, that I do not wish them to waste donations by sending further letters asking for more.
The 3 charities I donate to (1 local, 2 big nationals) have respected this, I am happy to say.
Doesn't of course stop their door to door and street canvasers bothering me... I hate the "can you spare a minute for charity" line.
But seriously, when you set up regular donation, send a letter explaining that you don't want to be asked for more, it worked for me.0 -
Which charity was it? I donate to Barnado's for a while (I stopped as I left the country) and I found them very good. Never asking for me but showing me what they were doing with their money. At one point something they sent me made me think I wanted to donate more - unfortunately I couldn't get through to them when I rang them up!0

I think if you go through life only doing nice things for others because you expect to be thanked, you are kind of missing the point. If you genuinely cannot spare one pound a month all you had to do was use the bin but, then again, perhaps you were already over stretching yourself with the fiver?"You're never beaten until you admit it."0 -
Where I live at the moment charity workers are rife! In the last month alone I've had 3 charity workers knock at my door and ask for money!! One man from a Cancer charity even commented on my 'nice car' in the driveway, and my engagement ring looking very 'expensive,' trying to make me feel guilty into donating! I give to 2 charities every month already and hate how they try and make you feel guilty, we can't all give to every charity out there!:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

PLEASE report these people!
The charity that is employing them will be mortified at the tactics they are using. They are employed on a comission basis so want you to sign up, but they also have strict set of guidelines they are supposed to work to. Mentioning you car and ring will certainly be seen as over-steping the mark and will lead to disiplinary action being taken.
Don't worry that you don't know the chuggers name as the charity will know which person is working which street at any given time and day. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0
