If I hand in my notice will I get paid?

Hi all
I work for a bank and I'm intending to hand in my 4 weeks notice on Monday. I am going to work for another company.
I have been employed at the bank since November 2009.
When people hand in their notice, because of the nature/responsibility/access we have to bank systems, they tend to just say "leave now without working your notice".
Now as to whether you get paid for this is apparently "manager's discretion" and there's no set rule.
So based on this information, if I get told to leave, should I be paid for the notice period, as I am prepared to work it, however it's likely they won't allow me to.
Thanks in advance all..

If they tell you to just leave without working your notice they still have to pay you for whatever notice period is stated in your contract.:smileyhea0

Actually, there is a set rule, its set out in employment law. If you are dismissed immediately, you are entitled to be paid in lieu for the notice period. This is a statutory right - there's no shades of grey.
So if your manager points out about it being at their discretion, point out they have no choice by law.0 -
And they need to pay for any leave you haven't taken, although if you've taken more leave than you've earned they can deduct that from your final salary.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Some interesting comments for you to take on board oliverp. Most of them are not factually accurate as they stand, and therefore unsurprisingly aren't qualified with legal reference, but something for you to think about.

Well if you're so well-learnt in this field, why not offer the "correct" advice to the OP?0 -
You may find the information you need below, the website is a Government one for business but the information is relevant to employees as well. (You need to check on the period of notice required by your contract, statutory minimum is one week for the length time you have been employed)

Why not? Principally because the clique on MSE don't appear to approve of new members giving accurate or qualified advice if their authority on a thread is challenged.
But as your question is so popular & for the benefit of the OP, I might provide that advice tomorrow.

Karl I think you input to this forum and board will be hugely invaliable, with have spoken in the past elsewhere and I must say you are a great resource of valid and accurate information/guidance. I suggest that anyone in this forum listens to Karl, and learns.0

I cant comment as to whether his information is valuable (particuarly as he has only posted a handful of time) however from what I see on this thread, all he did was slate other people who were trying to assist the OP and didnt actually offer anything at all apart from a bit of a self ego massage.:smileyhea0
