how/when to choose seats on a BA and AA flight?

How long are you in NY for? You should be able to book all the way through to NY at least, not sure about AA - but assume that you can go onto AA website & do same as on BA website.

you can access the AA booking online and choose seats on aircraft but you need the 6 digit locator code to do this.I have done the ones for my AA flight LHR-JFK no problem,you can also check in online and print boarding pass if required.
AA can also send a boarding pass scanable code to your smartphone to make airport check in quick aswell.
