Upgrade Haggling Advice

Hi,

My Vodafone contract is coming to an end, and I'm due an upgrade on my mobile. I'd like to upgrade to the Google Nexus One, or HTC Desire, but don't want to pay through the nose for it, either with a large upfront payment (Nexus1 is £99 and HTC Desire is £150), or high monthly charge.

Someone said you could get the phone for free, if you haggle a bit, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice when it comes to haggling upgrades from Vodafone? Should I phone upgrades first, and see what they offer, then ask to go through to cancellations, or go through to cancellations directly, and asks for a PAC code?

I have seen the HTC Desire on offer from O2 on an 18 month, £20pm contract. If I could get Vodafone to offer the same, I'd be happy!

Any advice, hints or tips, would be greatly received!

Thanks

Ben

That's what I got from Vodafone after requesting my PAC code. For this I get 600 mins, UL txts and 1Gb Internet.

Do be aware that Vodafone have annoyed alot of Desire owners recently with a buggy, bloated and unecessary branding update. See here:

Make sure you're talking to retentions and not upgrades, retentions can offer the better deals.

But even they have their limits, any offer is based on your spend over the last 6 months. If you've not gone over your plan price by much you're unlikely to get a really good offer. The system won't let them go beyond a point. And don't forget that the price of the phone has to be covered over the minimum term.

Just keep asking, 'it that the best you can do?' if you don't get anything close to hat you're looking for just call again. But if you get the same offer 3 or 4 times the odds are that's the best they can do for you.
  • I just got exactly what I wanted from Vodafone them by asking for my pak code from the general enquiries line. they had been charging me for texts that should have been included in my price plan and they had to pay me back over £100 so I was not happy at all with them which is why I was considering changing. I advise everyone on Vodafone to check your bills closely as they have done this to me before by charging for voicemail. I didn't get what i wanted first time through upgrades line but I didn't even have to haggle the second time they just gave it me. Will be keeping a close eye on their billing though :)
