I'm the opposite - i have a 2 year old so i hardly ever hoover - he is petrified of the noise! Never quite have the energy after he has gone to bed - or thats my excuse anyway!

I had that for 3 years too, a child petrified of the hoover, it was so bad that I had to go round the floor on my hands and knees with a dustpan and brush :(

  • Do you know, i thought my DGS was unique and peculiar!!! Never known another child petrified of the hoover like he was!! Couldn't even walk within 10 yards even when it was switched off!! Funnily enough, his Dad DS2, was lulled to sleep by the hoover, to the point I sometimes just left it running by his cot to get him off!

Aaah I cannot believe it, I just posted a huge long post and the darn thing didn't post..aaah!! So here goes 2nd time..

I have a cat that takes each morself of his cat food out piece by piece and walks across the other side of the kitchen to eat it. He does this three or four times before he actually stays where his bowl is.. The other cat just looks at him like he's weird - which he is..lol We even tried moving the cat bowl to the other side but nope he carried on doing it but to the opposite side this time. So we leave him now and let him get on with it.. I now follow afterwards with the dettol bottle..

Regarding the cleaning - I follow the flylady system and the house stays clean..its still cluttered but its lived in. Its not dirty thats the main thing.. And I love doing the hoovering since having the dyson - the carpets come up lovely and clean. Definately needed with two cats (soon to be three) and one dog (soon to be two) who continually shed fur..ahhh!!

Saying that everyone likes to come to me for coffee instead of me going to them - maybe 'cos its comfortable in my house and I don't worry about who is putting what where..

You lot clean your skirting boards?????????

I figure if I can't see it no one else can! :D

Oh thank goodness! Someone who has a similar mentality to me about cleaning!

I vaccuum when I remember or when I can see it needs doing (or when I know we will have guests :D). I don't think I have ever vaccuumed the stairs in this house! (ONLY ben here since April) I wipe the kitchen surfaces down every day, bathroom gets done when I can't wade through the dust anymore (anyone else notice dust builds up majorly on tiles?) although toilet gets done every time it's used  and all other tidying and cleaning gets done when I can bear it no longer! DH has such a high threshold for untidyness and dirt that if I ever left it to him, it'd never get done although when I ask he does it...kind of.

I just feel life is too short to spend even an hour a day cleaning when there is so much else to be done. We are fit and healthy and a little dirt never killed anyone! :p My mum taught me everything I know about cleaningand for that I am eternally grateful! ;) :T

  • What you can see gets cleaned! (thats usually the floor!)
If our friends dont like it they can clean it themselves!!
We often dont have an empty house someone from somewhere is staying. They have to chip in and everything gets there in the end.

I like the bathroom to be shiny, probably as i like to have a shower in a clean shower.

The floors get hoovered every few days, but only what you can see.

The TV gets dusted when its got a film over it!

The kitchen gets wiped down every day, normally before tea time just in case the cat has been on there before we prepare food. The oven gets cleaned when the smoke alarm goes off cos of the burning deposits on there. The microwave gets cleaned by putting the tray in the dishwasher.

The windows get cleaned when i realise i have to turn the lights on earlier.

Our cat is quite good about eating from her bowl, she has a limitless supply of food, if its not in her bowl she will help herself from the bag. You give up and let her carry on with it as you know if you pick the bag up she will have chewed through the corner and it will all end up on the floor.....
Bless em, you just couldnt live without them!
  • You lot clean your skirting boards?????????

thought i was doing well by painting all the skirting boards in my house when i moved in (almost a year ago) after that i never want to go near them again! :rotfl:
hoovering gets done downstairs 1-2x a wk, depending on how much cat hair is on the floor, upstairs very rarely as too lazy to carry the Henry up there, mainly just when theres more of my hair on my bedroom floor than on my head!!

cats were relegated to eating in the shed within 3 wks of getting them cos they insist on making a mess with their food, its cos they don't like their whiskers touching the sides of the bowl when they're eating(apparently) but all cat food bows are too small!

everything else gets cleaned when i start to smell it

  • we have laminate floors upstairs too and its amazing the amount of hair/dog hair you notice!! So i hoover every day, upstairs and down cos i can't stand fluffy floors!!
i also dust every day, clean the bathroom every morning, the kitchen 2 or 3times cos i can't walk out of there when theres dirty pots on the side!! the skirtings, door frames, lampshades etc get done about once a month when i remember!!:D
  • Well, I draw the line at clutter and organic filth. In other words, I don't like things strewn about on the floor, sofa, or table and countertops. The odd thing here or there isn't a problem, just so long as it's not permanant. Everything has its proper place and it should be returned to it as soon as possible. If I notice a "hot spot" building up, then I have to give some thought to whether or not I've got storage issues. Are things collecting because they don't HAVE a home? Then I need to think about what drawer or little plastic basket solution I can come up with. Papers are problematic, and I've made a filing system. Mail sits out on the table or counter until my husband has had a chance to read it. Then, it goes into a wicker basket on the sideboard. Every week or two, we'll go through the basket and file things. So, every piece of paper is either in the file where it belongs, or we can find it pretty quickly in that wicker basket. Meanwhile, there's no unsightly clutter.

Organic filth includes anything that would disgust you in a hotel room or restaurant. This includes hair in the sinks, juice spilled on the kitchen counter, visible dirt on the toilet or bathroom sink, and more than a couple of dishes piled in the sink for more than a little while. I'd vaccuum more if it weren't such a huge production, so I am forced to tolerate a few more crumbs than I'd prefer. I mean, if they bug me, then I can lug out the Dyson and have at them. I vaccuum maybe two or three times a week. I'm less worried about dust in places like bookshelves or baseboards (skirting boards?) but when they start to build up to a fuzzy layer that doesn't require a particular angle or sunlight to see, then I'll clean them.

Laundry is OK so long as it's not overflowing the dirty clothes hamper and nobody is about to run out of needed items of clothing. I do have a tendency to leave clean and folded laundry sitting in the basket, waiting to be taken upstairs. This counts as clutter, IMO, and is one of my weak points in that area.
