Blackberry jam

I just wanted to share this with everyone in MSE land that I am really proud of my self for making some jam for the first ever time :j

It was extremely moneysaving as I used the blackberries growing 'wild' in my garden that my lovely OH picked the day before (well I didn't want to get any thorns in my fingers did I!!!). I must admit, though don't share this with my OH, that it was a lot easier than I thought, and the splashes have all come out of the top I was wearing :)

So my little piece of advise to everyone is 'go on, give it a go' you might actually enjoy it.

Well done! It is very satisfying, especially when the fruit is free. :)
  • Well done! :T I tried jam-making for the 1st time last year (apple + blackberries from the hedges) - very satisfying and makes great presents! I've just made a load of mincemeat + have to keep opening the cupboard where I've put the jars just to look at them :o
    Sept GC lost track/£160 :(

    Oct GC /£160
  • I have to admit that I nearly ran out of jars so have made a mental note to myself to start hoarding now in preparation for next year, when I might even try it all again :j

Hi Princess - what recipe did you use for the mincemeat?

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

I ran out of jars so thanks to a top tip on this site, i went to tesco and bought the cheapest marmalade for 27p and chucked the marmalade away. It's cheaper to do this than to buy empty jam jars.

nooooooooooooooooo - (sobs) I love orange marmalade - you couldve posted some to me!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
    out of one jar of marmalade I couldve made;

Orange sauce to go with duck breasts or legs
you just heat the marmalade gently until its hot - add a good squeeze of lemon juice stir and thats it!

    Orange Cake - or biscuits
just add a tablespoon or two to a standard sponge or biscuit recipe and use orange juice for the liquid part instead of milk or water.

    sausage and marmalade sandwiches
    best with hot sausages!

    marmalade tarts
even nicer than jam tarts IMHO! which i only make if i have leftover pastry.

but thanks so much for the info on the cheap Tesco marmalade - thats so much cheaper than Aldis will stock up next time I do a Tesco shop!

Can I share your joy and excitement. I have just made damson jam. Second time jam making for me. It's so exciting isn't it. Who would of thought 10 years ago that my saturday nights would be spent jam making!:j

or that you would get so excited about it? :rotfl:

but well done you! I have just picked and frozen a batch of green beans from out of the garden and son just dropped off a carrier bag of runner beans from his allotment, along with beetroot, a baby cauli, a cabbage and some lettuce. so I guess i will be doing more blanching and freezing in a while.

(sighs) the excitement may well be too much for me!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I am considering attempting to make my own jam, but was wondering how long does home made jam keep for?
  • I'd love some idiot proof advice too. We have tons, and TONS of blackberries for the picking (they're a week or so off ready yet though) but I've never attempted jam making before.

A neighbour dropped round a jar of cherry jam the other day, home made from fruit from the local orchard- and it inspired me. It was, by far, the best jam I've ever tasted. We'll also have loads of plums dropping from the hedgrows soon too :)
