then my oh had the brilliant  idea of changing the OS from windows xp into windows 2003 enterprise edition (subcribes msdn btw). since then i am unable to listen any music. what would be the best way to resolve this? can someone help please?

Have you checked that your sound card is working correctly?

Will it play a sound file from the hard drive? ie a .mp3 or .wav file?

Or is it just CD/DVD's that wont play sounds?

    Goto control panel, sounds.

Enable the volume icon on taskbar. Then double click the little speaker next to clock and look at the sliders/mute tick box's.
  • thanks for your quick response :)

hi Moob - I went to hardware profile. I can see an entry there. Not sure what to do

Hi T4i - it won't play anything. also i went to control panel -> sounds and audio devices. the tabs are greyed out
  • have you tried downloading the soundcard drivers from the manufacturers website?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Hi albertross,

thanks for your reply. please excuse my ignorance - how to find out the manufacturer details :o
  • Is this a home build, or a well known make of PC (Dell etc..), does it have the video card that came with it, or one you have bought after the PC purchase?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • What have you changed OS?
    While I breathe.... I hope
  • hi albertross -
it was bought from dell. And yes it still has the video card.

hi fgaughan - we changed from windows xp media centre to windows server 2003 ent edition...
  • if you goto the support section of the dell website, and put your model in, it should list the drivers, and let you download them, not sure if they will be available for your o/s though.
