    Hi OP (and all Maccers)!

I am also in the process of possibly taking the massive plunge in buying myself an IMac... (also a plunge in bank balance :o). So lovely and shiny!

Any top tips? I may even do the mad thing and go out and get it in the morning. Admittedly I am no techie but I hope to get myself into my photographic hobby once my academic palarver is out the way. I have been umming and ahhing over a mac for months.

Just need a prod- shall I get one?

OP get one; you only live once!! treat yourself!!

Are you a student? If not take one with you, you will get a discount. When we got ours we got a student discount, free ipod, free printer and free 12months one to one tuition from the apple store(deal with the manager)

I would not go back to pc.

Student prices via friend/relative are in this link:-

    http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000715

The Applecare is also a lot cheaper and sometimes they offer an iPod Touch for virtually nothing.

Read somewhere that a non-student negotiated 10% with a shop/supplier, but not sure if that was UK. Might be worth a try before paying full price!

There is also an employee purchase program, not sure how that works you would have to google for info on that:-

If you cannot get discount any other way you can get 3% cash back from Quidco etc.:-

I think the basic iMac is best value of the lot and recently updated, with i3 processor and plenty of RAM as standard. People rate the built-in IPS screens highly over the standard screens we are used to.

Yes my BIL got 10% off negotiated with the manager. Also know of someone who got £20.00 off at PC World(wow!) but I would buy through the apple store anyway.
  • Hi Poppyoscar, I am just resitting my final year and I am a distance learning student. I think you can only get discounts if you log in from a PC on campus?

Not sure, here's what people have said:-

My girlfriend paid for mine and she wasn't a uni student.

The link is all the proof they need that you are a uni student.
For the educational discount, Apple wanted to get a scanned email copy of the student's ID photo card which was sent to the tel. sales rep direct. so, all in all, there was no hassle at all. altho' you need someone you know who's a student who could lend you their ID card (no need for NUS card, just the College/or Uni ID card will do)...
I bought mine through the proxy of the uni my mum studies at (I'm going in september) and there was nothing - as others have said just the link is enough.
I got the discount off my Macbook in 2007 by using my Learndirect documentation as proof that I was in education! It was only a £20-30 course as well!
There is a 0800 free telephone contact on the link to ask questions.

If you change the number on the link you get other Uni's in alphabetical order.

Not correct. If you want a student discount just call them up. All they asked me for was my Uni email address. I did this over the phone and my Imac turned up 7 days later (and my Uni grant depleted accordingly!).

Apple will bend over backwards to be helpful (or did in my experience).

I've have my Imac for over a year now (Took out the 3 year extended care) and it's been fantastic! Whilst I appreciate that the computer was more expensive than a Windows, I also appreciate the fact that since using the mac, I have spent no time recovering from virus, spyware, random crashes etc etc etc

However my Dell Inspiron 1300 is still going after 4/5 years worth of abuse (although not on the original XP and is currently running Ubuntu 10.04). It doesn't appear to want to die! When it does, I'm getting an Apple laptop........

Actually, the son starts Uni this September so I was going to get the 14% discount and cheap Applecare in his name (he has the paperwork needed for the discount. ;))

That is what initially got me thinking Mac for 50th Birthday treat.

It's just the sort of faults reported on the Apple forums that put me off, plus I don't really need one if they are problematic.
He just flashes his student id you pay and its registered all in your name ;o))

Thats how I bought my MacBook with my Sons help.

I brought a 21 " imac back in february and havent looked back since to be honest i dont think i would buy a windows machine again, there's a lot of this mac vs windows debate but personally i have used both and my preference is the mac quite simply it just works.

No, We went into the store with our son who is a student at college and got the discount. It was all done in store by the staff there.I dont know if they have changed their system but that is what we did. They just asked where he was studying.

We found the manager at the store really nice and helpful.
