If you go to Control Panel --> Windows Update Select Change Settings you will see when it does the automatic install by default it tends to be at 0300 every day. Of course if you switch the pc overnight then it will complete the install at the next time you switch on (and this lot will ask you to restart at the end).Just checked and I've got 14 of them. Do you have to install these ones manually? (My pc is set up for the important ones to automatically install but it hasn't done so, yet).
I've also got some 'optional' ones to do. I've tried googling in the past to glean info on these but when you are not very 'techie' it can be abit daunting. Can anyone recommend a good techie website which lists these, and gives comments on their pros and cons.
Thank you.
A good website ? here of course
you may notice some of the optional ones include .NET 4 and Live Essentials .NET 4 is not is used by too much yet but some day you will come across something that uses it and then you will have to bite the bullet then. I don't use live essentials since I use Tbird for mail even for my Live.com logins. Still waiting for November when Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is released (Apparantly it is 1.3GB big as at 7th August 2010) seems to increase approx 200mb per month.
Oh joy.
I noticed my desktop (Win7Ult) downloading an update last night, so I expect its at home asking for the Admin user password (I am at work at the moment)Signaller, author, father, carer.0 -
Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a try (even though I'm not sure how it could possibly work!) but no luck I'm afraid.mr_accountant wrote: »so what i do is run ad-aware scan on smart scan- then close the computer ( not restart- but shut down) then restart it and it does the trick. Now IE8 starts in around 15 seconds and mozilla always takes around 20 seconds and is unaffected by these silly updates.
Update:
It looks as though it may have been due to the "mscorsvw.exe" process, which compiles .NET assemblies in the background (even though every time I looked at it appeared to be using 0% CPU time). I followed the instuctions here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/davidnotario/archive/2005/04/27/412838.aspx
to force the compilations to be done now, so the "mscorsvw.exe" process no longer loads, and OE and IE8 have returned to their usual behaviour. I guess if I'd just waited the issue would have eventually resolved itself anyway.Stompa0 -

Yes, it was set at 0300. It didn't do it the next day though, so I altered the time whilst I was using the pc and it installed them all okay:)

That goes without saying but I would hate to become a pain in the proverbial by posting regularly about optional updates as they are quite frequent

Yes, Net Framework 4 is one of them, along withIntel G45/G43 Express Chipset, KB981078, KB982632, KB982664, KB980846, KB982519 and six Office related ones. (I've recently downloaded OpenOffice instead - as recommended here of course:D

Is this similar to Secunia?
