Will Mazuma delete all of my data?
Hi,
I dropped my iPhone 3G and it won't turn on any more.
Mazuma will give me £68 for it, but I'm wondering - will they definitely completely clear my data? I'd rather keep/destroy the phone for the sake of that £68 if given a choice, so I'm not sure what to do.
Give it to Mazuma, or destroy it? :X
Thanks

They are meant to wipe the phone data and given they are now fairly high profile they probably do. Nevertheless, it depends how sensitive the data on your phone is, and whether you need the £68. You might be unlucky and your phone might not be wiped for some reason. It's a straight trade off and it sounds like your not too fussed aboout converting the phone to cash.
Personally, I'm pretty paranoid about my personal data so if it were me, I'd just keep it as a techhie paperweight0 -
From what I remember, it's actually quite hard to entirely wipe the type of solidstate storage used in iphones - in the sense of doing such a thorough job job if someone devoted significant time and resources to it they couldn't recover anything - unless you physically destroy the memory. It's more challenging than dealing with hard drives.
Depends how paranoid you are!0 -
Thanks guys, may hold onto it then!
Also thought about sending it back to Apple to get it fixed, and then trying to sell it? Could be an option...0 -
Hmm, sorry just a quick bump on the above - am I crazy to send it off to Apple to get it repaired, and then sell it?0

Given it's a 3G, you'll probably pay more for it to get fixed than you will if you sell it. From my experience, having electronics fixed by the manufacturer is usually the insanely expensive route. EG Epson wanted 99£ + VAT just to look at my printer and then they said they'd charge me for parts and labour to fix it. I went out and bought a new printer instead!
If the iPhone doesn't look very damaged, I still vote that it be used as trendy paperweight0
