If you're wearing a jacket or coat, I have seen ladies get away with a flat cross-body bag, tucked away under the jacket when boarding.

Hand baggage with side pockets is handy here as you can slide a flat hadbag in and out again without having to unzip the main bag, just check how you pack at home first so you don't exceed dimensions.

Also swap your regular purse for a small flat one, remove unnecessary cards etc and just take the bare minimum in your handbag!

Wear a coat with pockets in it, put the stuff you need to carry in there, then stash the handbag into the suitcase.

fwiw I've read plenty times that they let you leave with a bit of excess baggage but make sure when you travel back that you get charged for it.;)

Ive been told by Ryan air and easy jet that my handbag had to fit in my carry on bag or id need to check one in.

First time this happened i had completely forgotton that my handbag was still on my shoulder - ended up holding up the queue whilst i desperately tried to shove it into my carry on bag!

I am a frequent flyer with BMIBaby and I always put my handbag (across the body type) into my carry-on bag. They are very keen on the "one bag" only rule at Manchester airport.

Strangely, the staff at check-in make no issue about the hand luggage but when boarding at the gate, the same staff start charging passengers with laptops etc in addition to their carry-on luggage. Very annoying to everyone as it holds up the queue. Now why do they do that?
