Can you take a handbag on BMI baby?

As the title says, can you take a handbag as well as hand luggage ( 10kg) on a BMI flight from bham to Alicante?
some one says you can but i am not sure.???
i only need to take my passport, a bit of make up and money in it. And if you can is it counted as part of your 10kg

Hi-below is cut directly from BMI web page, i would read you are only allowed 1 bag on the plane. Hope it helps

"Well, on bmibaby you can take one piece of hand baggage on board as long at it doesn't exceed the dimensions of 55x40x20cm and has a maximum weight of 10kg.

Please remember these dimensions are based on a packed bag, including the wheels/handles Once you have finished putting all your bits and bobs in it may be bigger than before, so make sure you double check this before you leave the house. If it doesn't fit comfortably into one of our baggage gauges at the airport, you will have to check it into the hold and there will be an additional fee to pay to do this"

Normally Airlines only allow 1 piece of hand luggage and you hand bag counts as 1 piece ,you will probably get told to place it inside your hand luggage bag
As long as you dont exceed the 10kg you will be ok doing that

I've never, ever had my handbag counted as hand luggage - I have travelled with Ryanair, Easyjet and Virgin.

You have been lucky then ,My wife is always told to place her handbag inside our small cabin suitcase .flown with Ryanair ,Jet2 ,BMI baby in the last 12 months
They all state "ONE PIECE OF HAND LUGGAGE"

Each passenger (excluding infants) is permitted to carry one piece of cabin baggage on board (free of charge). Strictly one item of cabin baggage is permitted per passenger (excluding infants). Your handbag, briefcase, laptops, shop purchases, camera etc must be carried within your permitted 1 piece of cabin baggage. It should weigh no more than 10kg and not exceed the maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.

Have you ever read the large warning notice on the Ryanair boarding pass??? It clears states one piece INCLUDING anything you buy at the airport. Exceeding this could cost you £35 or having to bin something. It is enforced as this topic has been on another thread in the last 2 days and some said they saw it happen several times at Alicante (think that was the one they said).

At some airports (Stansted last time I flew) they would not let you through the security check with 2 items, they sent you back to the checkin desk.

I have to say, I have been told in past to put my handbag into my suitcase. Especially on BMI baby.

Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. Depends how the stewardesses slept the night before I guess.

So nowadays I always make sure it will fit in and have it in while they are looking (ie boarding). Once on the plane I take it out again and put it below the seat in front of me and the hand luggage into the locker above.

Failure to comply:

If you fail to comply with our policies we reserve the right to refuse travel.

If you exceed your allowance, you are required to check additional and / or oversized bag(s) into the hold at check-in or at the gate. You will be charged a fee of £18 (current standard airport charge) per item at the boarding gate prior to boarding the aircraft.

Although restrictions are being relaxed at some UK airports, easyJet will not consider changing its hand baggage policy until the rules and procedures at the majority of UK airports become clearer and more consistent.

There is no weight restriction although easyJet does apply a reasonable limit — i.e. you must be able to place the piece of luggage safely in the overhead storage bins without assistance.


i was shocked to see this cos i always thought it was ok to have a handbag or carrier bag from the duty free onboard as well, but then i suppose why should women get to take an extra handbag on? and some (not mine of course!!) are huge! my daughter is taking her laptop on as her hand luggage as she wants to watch a film, i am not sure if she will be allowed but either way i suppose it is safer with her on the plane than in the hold. it is good how easyjet have no weight restrictions on cos if my hold bags are over i will be doing some shifting about to take the heavy stuff on board with us

I came back from Dublin last Autumn with a large carrier bag and a small shoulder bag and was told that I had to fit one into the other or else have one item checked in as hold luggage. I put my handbag into the carrier bag, they checked it still fitted the weight (it did as i was well under) and they let me through, where i promptly took my handbag out of thhe carrier bag. That was with Ryanair.

I now travel mainly with monarch and I am always asked if I have hand luggage as well as my hand bag as if so I would have to check my hand luggage in as hold baggage. Coming back from Malaga a month or so ago Monarch were actually strictly enforcing this and several people had to stump up and pay extra to have an additional hold bag or else try and force things into their carry on bag.

Whilst i suspect most of the time you would get away with it I would urge caution just in case or even take a body bag to wear under your clothes for your money and passport.

I think its definitely best to make sure that if you do take a handbag, you can fit it in your hand luggage bag/case if asked to. I haven't been asked to do this yet when flying with BMI baby, but I have been asked to by Easyjet.

I always take a very small handbag, just big enough for essentials and drop it into my handluggage before going through. Works no problem;)
Leaves me free to rant at the outrageous 'handluggage' a lot of passengers seem to get away with carrying on.....maybe it is just our airport!
