As above, get Avast Free - install it, then open the desktop icon for it.
You'll see a message saying you have a 30 day trial. Click the Register button, ignore the upgrade offer (unless you want to pay, that is), click register free version.
Insert *any* name and a made-up email address (I use [EMAIL="not@here.com"]not@here.com[/EMAIL]) to avoid going on to spam lists.
Send those off and it'll register you for 1 year's free updates.
Oh, and I suggest turning on the 'Silent' mode permanently (no update popups) and turn off sounds - the update shouts at you when complete!
