Stressed need help with damaged carpet in rented house

Hi we rent our house and our dog has weed on the dinning room carpet to one side. The carpet is a loop pile. We tried to remove the stain out of the carpet and then hired a rug doctor. The rug doctor didn't remove the stain, it ended up because of too much rubbing where the pile is now damaged and it is noticeable. We had a professional carpet cleaner come in today to clean the carpet and the stain is nearly gone but the carpet pile is damaged where the dog weed.
We know that it is our fault and our responability to sort this out. We were looking at replacing the carpet, only thing is the carpet runs through the living room and dinning room, would it be possible to replace the dinning room carpet and for the living room carpet to be left down but joined to the dinning room carpet. Other wise it would mean replacing carpets for both rooms and there is nothing wroing with the living room carpet. Can they be joined together so it is not noticeable. Im so stressed with all this.

Hi
Two options that come to mind:
1. Depending on size and location of stain/damage area it may be possible for a carpet repairer to cut and switch a piece from somewhere else thus moving the damaged portion to somewhere not so noticeable or completely out of the way. Do you have any old offcut?
2.Good carpet fitter should be able to cut and seam a join across threshold of carpet or fir a threshold bar/cover over the join-if done with right looking material iebrass or wood depending on colour scheme can look OK.
Hope that helps0 -
Thankyou for your help oldernotwise. We do have a couple of offcuts. I did email one company about patching the carpet and they said it would cost £165.00, to me that is expensive. We could buy a carpet for about £190 plus underlay and fitting.
Also do we need to tell our landlord. Im worried that if i tell him he will ask us to leave. There is no other damage to the house and we do look after the house.Married 09/09/090 -
If it was me i would inform the landlord that you have had a minor accident, tries to rectify it at your own expense but are still not happy with the result. Your honesty will lokk better than waiting for your landlord to find out later!(i would hope). Only you know what your landlord is like.
Ultimately you are responsible, that is why you presumably paid a deposit. If landlord not happy with carpet wait till end of tenancy and replace yourself thus avoiding losing some/all deposit.

We had a similar situation with a damaged carpet in a rental property (ours was nail varnish :-( ) I ended up claiming on my household contents insurance, so it cost me £50 excess but they replaced the carpet and the landlord was satisfied.0

I rented a room in a house a while ago and dropped candle wax on the carpet, wrecked it. The landlady lived with me so I had no choice but to tell her. I would have done anyway. Landlords expect a bit of wear and tear. If I were in your shoes I'd let your landlord know and ask him if he has details of where the carpet came from, get in touch with the supplier and if they fit, ask them to come and have a look. Our cleaner in our last house dropped bleach over the carpet on two of the stairs. Wool carpet, wrecked it. We replaced just the stairs. As the carpet was really light, you could tell where it was new at the join with the landing but we did get a brand new carpet up the stairs through the insurance, so an upside, I wasnt complaining! Perhaps you could promote this benefit to your landlord if you only replce the carpet in the room where the doog wee'd? Honestly, dont worry about it, its material and it can be fixed. Unless your landlord is satan he/she will understand. You sound like a decent person!!! Good luck0

Thankyou very much older, van and skiingbear for your help. I have had a look to see if we could claim off our insurance but our accidental cover doesn't cover pets. I have phoned the landlord and spoke to his wife and explained to her and like you suggested skiing bear asked about where the landlord gets his carpets from. His wife is going to speak to him about it and get him to give me a ring so he can come and have a look at it. She says that the landlord does have a carpet company that he uses. She was very understanding about it. I do feel a bit better now.Married 09/09/090

That's the way to do it. Letting the landlord know is the first thing to do.After all you have tried to remove the stain with your own money.
And it seems quite possible to just replace the affected area (depending on the type of carpet of course).
Ultimately you may have to make your dog pee all over the carpet so that i would look all the same...just kidding.
Good luck.0 -
I would tell the landlord what has happened, no point replacing it till you're ready to move out as the dog may do the same again, you might trip and spill Ribena on it the next day...
They do expect a bit of wear and tear, you've not left it to rot, so it's just the wearing of the carpet. That won't cause long term damage to the floor like ignoring it would so I think you should be OK there.
It's best to tell the truth, but it might be in your favour if you say it was curry sauce or something other than dog wee that got spilled... if there's no stain now then they won't be able to tell, will they?;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
