Charging a lodger for use of expensive to run appliances

The most common reason is lint/fluff caught around the heater unit. If you have a DIY person around get them to pull the case off and clean it out, IMO it's a good idea to do this with any dryer every few years.
Another important point - do NOT switch off a dryer and leave the clothes inside - the heat of them sitting can start a fire. Most dryers run cold for the last 5-10 minutes to cool them off, and if you stop it part-way you must remove them.
Other reasons are overheating if they are running inside a shut cupboard - they need a constant airflow.0 -
I don't understand why people are calling the OP a scrooge - I do one load of clothes a week and one load of sheets/towels. I can understand a female or a clean-freak using it a bit more, but a load of washing and drying every day will cost a lot more than anybody could reasonably factor into a lodger's rent.
It's possible that they are poor at planning and are washing and drying a single set of clothes, but if it's full loads they must be doing it for friends, or are very messy for some other reason!
Just because your meagre with your washing doesnt mean everyone else is, there is only two of us here but we get through 6-8 loads a week.
We can both change outfits 2-3 times a day depending on what we are doing.
I cant believe the fuss over a bit of drying, I was sad enough to calculate what it cost me to do a load.......... it was the princely sum of sixteen hole pence, I know I am an honorary Yorkshire man, but still 16p doesnt really irk.0 -

Two of us and 2 loads per week, one dark wash, one light. No tumble drier - hung up in spare room.

How about the total abuse of the services on offer, the laziness, the failure to comply with quite simple rules?
Perhaps this landlady isn't cut out sharing her property due to her timidity - after complaining that her lodger has used the tumble-drier every day for 2 weeks despite good weather and the provision of a washing line in the garden, she then let the lodger use it another 8 times, including 3 loads in one day, before raising the issue.0 -
Maplin energy monitor,N67HH. £4.99 while stocks last.0

Looking at mine, which is a washer dryer (link) it uses 5.58kwh for a 60c cotton cycle (the dryer takes the lions share). Southern Elec standard price is 12.096p per KHw, therefore it's 67p per cycle (wash+dry).
It can of course be a cheaper tariff, and a cooler wash.0 -
Take the fuse out, pretend it has broken down and say you can't afford to buy a new one

I was going to suggest the exact same thing!
Although, if there was a tumble dryer in the property when the lodger moved in it would be reasonable for them to expect the landlord to pay for a new/to get it fixed.
So . . . take the fuse out/replace it with a broken one and tell the lodger that over use of the tumble dryer is blowing the fuses.
Or . . . take a look at the usage in the next bill and if it's gone up politely explain that the bill is very high and ask if they are prepared to pay a contributon since they use the tumble dryer so much.0 -
Chuck it out and don't replace it. Problem solved.0
