Text messages disappearing

Can anyone help with my problem?
If I send a text message to a phone that is switched off, and that phone is not switched on for some time eg 2 days, when it is switched on the message is not received.
How long is the message kept on the system, is this time variable?, if so how.
I know this should not really be a problem but this particular phone is off more than it is on.:(

PS I am on the Virgin network.

You can set the massage validity usually in the your phone setting. By the sound of yours is set to only a few hours or a day.

As a a rule its in the message setting section of the phone and called 'massage validity' you should have a number of options like 1 hour, 6 hour a week ect. Either set it to the maximum time that there or some have an option just called maximum. They will still vanish off the network server after a time (maybe a couple of weeks) or the server would get cloged up with messages it couldn't deliver . .
