Hi All
Whilst reading the tips section I noticed this comment
'Though within the EU you won't be charged more than £49 in one month'

It applied to data downloading whilst in Europe.
Can anyone tell me why?
I recently had a bill far in excess of this.

  • Hi there

The number of complaints about the amount charged for data use abroad is HUGE! As a result, the EU decided that all phone companies should set a cost limit of £49 per month on peoples use.

The policy is an "opt out" system, so all phone companies had to apply this to every phone contract (I think it's only recently come into force; June or July? Someone else will know) and phone users have to decide they don't want the limit.

It's worth pointing out that (as I understand it) this is not £49 for as much data as you want, but a 'hit the limit and you can't use it again until next month' deal. The cost per MB isn't changing, so you won't get a lot for your £49 on most contract data roaming terms.

My understanding of it is that it started on July 1st and is a limit of 50 Euro which is about £43 or so and that when you start getting close to the limit they have to send you a text to say you are getting close to the limit do you want to carry on.
Unless you agree they cannot charge you more than 50 Euro's so would chop it off till the following month.
It's not just about the money
