Can't get broadband - HELP!!!!!!

I've just moved into a property that was set up with AOL broadband. The previous occupier cancelled the contract on 25 August, but every broadband supplier that I am trying to join says that I am on contract.
I do not necessarily want to stay with AOL, but I can't seem to go with anyone else. AOL won't sign me up with broadband because they are saying that my line hasn't been cleared by BT.
Can anyone advise what I should do next as I desperatly need to get onto broadband for work as soon as possible.

well finally got onto bt wholesale today and they removed the tag straightaway - they gave me some waffle yesterday about having to get in touch with the previous owner of the property and her having to do it - what a cheek!
anyway signed up with aol again now (mainly because you get £35 cashback with topcashback) so we will see how it goes
thanks for your help0 -
Good news all round then.
