BT has set up a specialist team to deal with Tag problems. Their contact number is 0800 1699576.
Sort of a pre-emptive response to the Ofcom consultation:

Hope it helps given the number of MAC related problems posted on here.

I work on the said line & we do not deal with any MAC issues.
We only deal with tag enquires & if someones trying to raise a mac they should via their ISP!0 -
Hi Normanmark,
Could you please explain more about the services that a consumer can receive when they dial that number?
Many thanks!
Kind regards,

Its a phone number open up to both End Users & Service Providers.
Basically if a EU/ISP is trying to place an order for broadband & the result comes back saying there is already an existing service on the line or an incompatible product then we look into it.0 -
Ta - always good to have someone in the know posting.0

Hi everyone
I am shocked   I have had a nightmare of a job trying to get TalkTalk to place a manual order for tag removal after E7broadband left tag on my line. To the point I told them to cancel my order on Monday as I felt they had not forfilled there contractual obligations to me (TalkTalk that is)
I signed back to BT and all my calls are going back to them within 14 days.
Still having the tag on the line I called the number above and in 10 seconds tops the guy there came back and said he could see previous tag and he has just removed it :j :j :j
I am stunned really at how quick this was done. Considering I have telephoned BTWholsale several times throughout August and TalkTalk yet no one could do this for me. If they had done it 2 weeks back I could have had my broadband up and running now..
IF YOU STILL HAVE A TAG ON YOUR LINE PHONE THE NUMBER ABOVE NOW !!!
Fagun a thanks coming your way Cheers for the post

I have phoned the tag team on the above number both on the 8th Sept and the 11th Sept basically because i was told tag removed on 8th Sept but still unable to sign up to any adsl unless i give them a MAC which i dont have.
Phoned back 11th Sept to verify that tag was removed other day the guy there said yep its gone although did he mention i was with TalkTalk but I explained I am in process of going back to BT as I told TalkTalk on 8th Sept I was leaving and placing a re order with BT which I did. So another 7 days from now I should be all BT.
OK I have no tag from previous E7 , TT never got connected to broadband (guy did 3 tests inc an ECO test and application test to see if it will allow him to connect me and it would)only phone line which is held by BT (BT lease my line to TT) so I have a BT line just managed by TT for another 7 days.
So does anyone know how it is he can place an order for new broadband yet when I try I get message BB detected please give us your MAC code and we may proceed.
I am at a loss I just dont know what else I can do now.
Can anyone please shed some light on this or point me in the direction of someone that can so I can get it sorted.
Cheers

Use the BTw ADSL Availability Checker, link here, and see whether it still suggests there is already an ADSL service on the line.
If it thinks you have an ADSL service or incompatible product, then it will still say something in red like this:-
Note: If you have an ISDN or Home Highway service connected to this number and you wish to purchase Broadband ADSL, this can be arranged through your Service Provider. You will only be able to keep one of your ISDN / Home Highway telephone numbers - generally you can choose any of your numbers but there are some rare exceptions. If you have an existing Broadband ADSL service and wish to change service providers then please contact both your new and existing service provider to have this service transferred.
If the BTw checker doesn't report any existing ADSL service, then it is a problem with your new provider - perhaps they aren't accessing the BTw database directly, and only download updates periodically???0 -
The 0800 number listed above for BT Wholesale appears to be no longer valid. When I phoned it, a message told me "End users should consult their service providers"!0
