I did a Ei 3090 for a friend in work recently....same processor, same chassis (DSG based lots of lappys on it, it's a Uniwill L51I chassis). The second RAM slot is under the keyboard, but it's not too difficult to get to. On their vista machine, I upped it from 512MB to 2GB, and it practically flew in comparison :D

I'd say chucking and extra 1GB or even better remove the 256 and put in 1.5 or 2GB in the op's, running XP, in conjunction with a full cleanup and trim down, will do the biz nicely :D
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Vista on 512 MB ?! I bet that ran well. :rotfl::rotfl:

    Ohh Yeahhh !!!! ;):D

Part of the problem was that microsoft initially insisted that vista could run ok on 512MB, and so pc makers/sellers sold that spec.

However, it became blatantly obvious right from the off that 1GB min was needed, and that soon grew to 2GB as soon as the updates and SPs started getting released.

i agree with the fact more ram would be a big help and that a full re-install of windows would certainly be helpful to get rid of the !!!! that has built up over the years

however before you do a full reinstall of windows i would suggest you write down a list of all the programs you use and want, and then see if they are still availible or you still have the disks and keys, if not it might be better to try and do the fixes first

i would also like to suggest that if there are no specific programs you must use and if you dont feel comfortable or willing to get more ram and install it then it would be worth your while checking out Ubuntu or one of the varients of ubuntu such as Lubuntu or Xubuntu, if you dont know what these are they are full operating systems which can replace windows and they are totally free and have a massive amount of free software, and some of the versions have very low system requirements

you can try ubuntu using a liveCD which will run the entire operating system from the cd and your ram and makes no lasting changes to your hard drive so if you dont like it you can close the system down take the cd out and boot back into windows and everything will be the same as it was before you tried it, however please note that since it is running just from the cd and your ram it will run a lot slower than a full proper install,

the liveCD is mainly used to check that all your hardware has drivers and if you feel comfortable with the differences between windows and Ubuntu as there ARE differences since ubuntu is not windows, sounds simple but so many people dont seem to grasp this when they first try it.

anyways i will stop with my 'Linux spam' as some others will probably think this is ;) and good luck in sorting yoru system
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

It simply isn't necessary to go to the trouble of getting under the keyboard for the sake of 256MB, especially as we are referring to XP here.
So, if the slot at the bottom has the 256MB RAM, replacing it with the 1GB module will be more than adequate.
If the 256MB is under the keyboard then and the empty slot is at the bottom, that's ideal.

    Hi All,

Thank you so much for all your advice above. Ive just looked through the discs I got with the laptop and XP was already installed and so I dont have a disc to run a new install.

I'll run the rpogrammes as advised above and will post the results tomorrow hopefully.

Thanks again this is a massive help.

Perhaps, as per the link that I posted, you need to create your own disc.

Before someone trawls through it, are you going to wipe (using the restore partition) it or not?

If you have a restore partition, and backup, it will be done in 15 mins
