Hi
My OH was previously on an O2 Pay UpFront tariff but he has just received a letter today saying that that tariff is no longer available and they are going to move him to a £17.99 pay monthly tariff so I'm considering what other options are available to him.

He doesn't use the phone a great deal and when he does, it's just calls and texts (more calls than texts).

Can anyone help explain what a SIM only deal is, I assume it's similar to a contract, ie number of minutes/texts etc per month for a fee but no tie in in terms of a contract, is this correct?

The other question is, if he went to PAYG, could he move his number with him?

Any help would be most appreciated. Also any suggestions on what I should consider that I may have not mentioned would be most helpful.

Thanks

Yes, SIM Only is normally a 1-month rolling contract (although can be longer - be careful!). Most, if not all of the top networks offer them.

Probably the best (cheapest) network to go with is GiffGaff. For £10 a month, you get 100 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet (via a 'GoodyBag' which lasts 1 month). Or, you can simply use the PAYG tarrif of theirs - which is the cheapest in the uk at 8p per minute and 4p per text.

To move his number across, he needs to ask o2 for a PAC (Port Authorisation Code) which is free and you give to the new network to move the number across.
