    I think you're right, lucylucky.
I don't fancy getting my roof aerial upgraded for only a 3 or 4 hd channels......I suspect an aerial upgrade would be 3 figures for someone to come and do it for me.
I'll return the box to the shop....I only bought it yesterday so I'll be fine returning it.

Might have a look at sky and see about upgrading to HD via that.....only thing is it's a £10 a month subscription.

    Thanks to all again.

You could always consider Freesat as an option if you want HD.

What would be required for that to work?
Can i split the cable from my sky dish to the sky box and the freesat box so they both work and I'd simply select the source on the tv?

my tv is a 1080p lcd used for the ps3 and normal sky so the tv isn't a problem....it's just that I'm not totally sure what kit I need to get it to work properly.

You swap the Sky box for a Freesat box or, depending on how many outputs you have from the LNB run cables from it to both the Sky box and the Freesat box.

You can always get a quad LNB fitted if need be and run new cabling.

So in a year you'll have spent on additional Sky subs what it would cost you to get the aerial sorted.
You've spent more than that on the HD box. so why not just do the job properly?
Even Freeview SD normally requires an external aerial to give a decent signal.

I would get the roof aerial sorted out. shouldnt cost that much (about £80 for a total new replacement round here) but yours probably just needs pointing the right way by someone with a proper readout meter.

I would guess that as you are so clost to the transmitter whoever installed your current aerial just pointed it roughly in the right direction and got a great TV pic.

Freeview is a lot more fussy about needing a near perfect signal that could be why you got a bad pic on your other tv.

I used a borrowed aerial installers meter to aim mine and a tiny amount of movement can make a massive difference in signal strenth.
Too much sig can be a bad thing too, as I was told you get too much "noise" along with it.
The signal needs to be within certain levels so it would be much easier to pay someone to set it for you.
“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”

Thought about the sky subscription compared to the one off cost of the box.
In my opinion it would be at least cost beneficial because on the freeview I'd get a 3-4 channels.
Sky hd I'd get several times that because I already subscribe to the sports....that's another 3 or 4 on it's own.
£80 for the box...plus at least the same for replacement aerial - £160 for 3-4 channels.
or £10 a month to sky for 23 Hd channels, based on my existing package.

Store policy is ok for returning goods within 7 days (Morrisons - cheapy box)
