Freeview HD

I've just bought a Freeview HD box.I've tried tuning it several times but it can't find an aerial connection.

I have an aerial in the loft and a DAB radio connected to it. The DAB works perfectly.
I bought an f connector splitter and ran an extension to the freeview box but still no reception.
I've tried rotating the aerial towards the transmitter which is around 13miles away. No difference - still no signal.

As I type this, my DAB is working great but the freeview box can't pick up a thing.

I've checked and tightened all my connections and am sure they're all fine. It's new cables and connections all round.

Any ideas what else to check???

Thanks

What type of aerial is it, a DAB aerial or a TV aerial?

And has the aerial ever given you a TV picture on a TV?

Also if you split the aerial lead that does not help either.

    Thanks Marcus

not sure on the aerial - it's only ever been connected to a DAB, never a a TV.
I appreciate splitting the signal will weaken it but I'm only 13miles from the transmitter, have no issues with tv reception.

I tried connecting my sky dish to it but still nothing although having spent the last half hour reading about this, i wasn't convinced that would work anyway.

Beginning to think i'll just take it back to the shop!!!

According to Freeview, the STV region won't be fully covered by Freeview HD until October '10 to Feb '11. Only parts of Glasgow are currently receiving it. Put your postcode in to this link to check:

What transmitter are you pointing your aerial at?

Your Sky dish has nothing to do with Freeview so that would be of no use.

How do you know you have no problems with TV reception if no TV has ever been connected to the aerial?

I have a roof aerial connected to another tv (non HD) in another room with no problems.
I have sky tv and pick up every channel I should with no issues.

No tv has been connected to this particular aerial but I don't have a problem picking up tv on other systems.

    Is it a TV aerial?

Have you tried the freeview box on the other aerial cable?

Sky and Freeview are two totally separate systems.

What does the aerial look like, and what happens if you plug it into an analogue TV?

I've tried pointing it at Blackhill Transmitter - approx 13miles away.
I appreciate sky and freeview are seperate systems......i didn't expect it to work...it didn't :)

Ok....as suggested....I tried the freeview box on another tv which is connected to the outside roof aerial.....and it worked.
Weather here is poor and the picture was breaking up but it did find enough of a signal to tune in all the channels..... success!!!!

Next question........what is the best aerial for loft installation to pick up freeview HD?
Or must it be outside to work properly???

    thanks

Much better chance with a rooftop job to be honest.

If the picture you were getting is breaking up on your rooftop aerial then I would suggest upgrading that one and getting it properly split to the various places you want the feeds to go.

A decent CAI approved person should be able to quote you for that.

As you are only 13 miles from Blackhill you should be getting a solid picture as it is a main transmitter not a relay one.
