*Update* Need to find a warm home and comfortable lap for 18 year old cat. Any ideas?

It's a real shame they have to be separated
I would still put some little notes through the doors of her immediate neighbours... knowing cats, there might be someone who already knows her/him as a regular visitor and would hate the thought of the cat having to move away. Particularly since, at 18, it's a relatively short-term commitment.
Just explain the situation as you have on here, "Mrs X of number XX is having to move away and we're looking for a home for Tibbles..."Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
There are care homes who do manage this.
Toxoplasmosis is more of a risk if you eat meat than if you keep a cat (according to the Toxoplasmosis Trust) There are some organisations which will help you negotiate with care homes about pets. Of course it is something which requires careful management and it may otherwise be the perfect placement - or it may be that it is all show, they are really not very creative thinkers and this will not be the last situation where your grandmother's welfare is compromised.
I think Riverhaven Elderly Cat Welfare is still going and specialise taking in cats in this sort of situation. I do also have a friend who specialises in taking in elderly and sick animals if you would like to PM me. It would probably take too long in this situation but I have known cats go with the house if it is sold and it has worked out very well. A commitment to pay vet fees in return for updates would be a big help in rehoming I would imagine.
Good luck - a very upsetting situation.0 -
I think it's very sad when homes force elderly people to give up their beloved pets
You could try Oldies Club www.oldies.org.uk who themselves rescue dogs but do sometimes try to help out by listing the odd older cats on their website too.
A friendly & caring charity that I think will do what they can to try and help you.
There are also various animal welfare & rescue forums you could try, eg The Refuge, Rescue Helpers Unite, Rescue Aid for anaimals and of course any local rescues you may have.
Good luck0 -
not really got anything to add but wanted to wish you luck in finding a new home for him, it will be a heartwrenching time when they have to part company. i think offering to pay for his upkeep & vet bills in return for updates is the best way to go as i'm sure that is what most people would be concerned about when considering giving him a home. much love & luck, please keep us updated x'there goes an old transexual, last seen heading south,

As above, try the cinnamon trust - they help people who cannot take their pets with them.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

People suggesting that the cat go with her should bear in mind that in a home with 30 other residents, the chances of at least one of those being allergic to cats is quite likely, and maybe the staff too. I have quite a bad allergy to cats (though I do love them!) which is what made me think of this. It's very very sad that he can't go with her though.
I really hope this has a happy ending and that you manage to find a lovely home for him. Please keep us updated.0 -
I would recommend trying your vets-we would rack our brains to think of someone who would want him, or try and get foster care at the least. Its worth a try (and yes, offering to cover vets fees for an old cat may help with finding a carer-but I would advise talking to vets about maybe doing tests prior to rehoming, stress of change may precipitate kidney disease etc

I agree with Badger Lady, if your Grans's cat was one one for going out and about there may well be a neighbour who would take her cat . The neighbours need to know the situation... lots of animal lovers out there do not go to church or WI
I know that if I liked the cat who was in this situation I would seriously think about taking it in, while my best friend would take the cat in in a heart beat.
Honestly I think a nice worded note delivered to close neighbours may well do the trick.
