I wholeheartedly agree. I refuse to pay £10 to an organisation run by left wing zealots looking to boost their own CV.

Maybe if they actually start some campaigns which affect students I might think differently.
    haha, no truer words mate!

I'm just starting my third year. I use my NUS card quite a lot, mainly to get discount at HMV.co.uk (loads cheaper than the shops and free delivery) and a couple of other places. Is the only way to continue getting student discounts to buy this Extra card? 5% off at Amazon would be quite good too. Are the basic NUS cards worthless now? (unless a store accepts it by mistake)

Worthless in terms of getting discounts the NUS has brokered with companies but not for use with companies who offer student discounts which require student status as opposed to NUS affiliation. Many museums and other places will accept it as proof of status though your universities own card could also be used for this. You may need an NUS card as well as your student card to join your universities clubs and societies.

As I understand it, basic NUS cards will no longer be issued, you will still receive your University ID which some stores will accept however you won't get an additional free NUS card.

When I was at Uni we had a combined NUS/student card which was valid for all 3 years. We weren't given the actual NUS cards that many Uni's distribute. However, I know in Cardiff's case that they're selling NUS extra cards this year so chances are for students from 2006 onwards NUS will no longer appear on the University card.

The democracy card is the free alternative to the 'Extra' hence the name although this will not give you anything more than a vote in elections and be another form of student ID.

  • I'm getting one for continued 10% hmv.co.uk and the new 5% amazon.co.uk. I'll probably only save around £10 and break even.

Don't know the details, but the site claims that the £10 goes directly to your SU, not to NUS like everyone is saying.

I couldn't upload photos even though they were within the size requirements. Had to plug my EyeToy in to use as a webcam! Didn't get the flattering photo I wanted but amazon.co.uk and hmv.co.uk probably won't get to see the webcam pic so it doesn't matter. They should do an even cheaper online discounts only card.

Wish they wouldn't write error messages that say they have been informed about the problem and so there's no need to email them.
