NUS extra

Just a heads up about this card, seems quite interesting. Cost is £10, offers lots of discounts. The one that caught my attention is the 5% off amazon.co.uk purchases and free delivery over £15, as I use amazon a lot, however I'm not 100% sure if this is for all amazon.co.uk purchases (including marketplace) or just actual items bought from amazon themselves, I'd assume it would be the latter. Still some other decent offers, might be worthwhile over the year. But remember just a regular NUS will still get you the same discount at many places they have listed (such as topman/shop and hmv).

I'm afraid your wrong, a regular NUS no longer exists.
You can get a free democracy card, which lets you vote in union election type things and proves you are a member of the union - its free - it does not let you get discount in shops
then there is the £10 (rip off) card, which lets you vote and gives you discount in shops...
For complete information see the nus site and click on cards, but essentially, pay a tenner and get discount, don't pay and get no discount, plus if your university is after the money (which they all are) they they will basically deny all knowledge of the free non-discount card.

At Subway in Loughborough they turned down my in date 2005-2006 associate card saying they now only except NUS extra! Pretty amusing since no Loughborough Students would have them yet (I think?). But does seem like we will be forced to pay the £10. Even the associate card is cheaper! Though if places are now declining associate cards (like pizza hut always have!) then that renders that useless and all post 16 students not in a NUS registered college without student discount =(~Diminutive0

Yeah I had to pay £10 last time. It is annoying as my uni never offered the free card. I suppose I did use the card a lot when going to cinema, shopping at topman, hmv so I think I made up the £10 with the savings."He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,
He will kill your cat and nail him to the door"

Just checked the site and I see what you are saying, however many shops/services will still give you discount if you can prove you are a full-time student, i can still show my university student card in shops, at the cinema etc and get my discount.Petree wrote:I'm afraid your wrong, a regular NUS no longer exists.

However it looks like things may soon change, as more people affiliate themselves with the new scheme its likely that only NUS extras will be accepted for student discounts. A bit silly making students pay for discounts! Kind of defeats the object of giving a discount if you have to pay to get it, and will exclude those students from certain goods/services that do not wish to pay for the card. After all, the whole idea of giving discounts to certain groups of customers is to increase supply to them, making products more affordable to those on restricted incomes. Way to screw up the price mechanism! :rolleyes:0 -
Many places turn down my university card surely its still a student card. Thats why I never show it, only till they ask if im a student.
Anyways, since they all want to take nus cards think ill go for it, quick question does the card get sent to your home address?0 -
The card gets sent to your Student Union office (if there's more than one, you can choose which one it goes to).0
