Hi,
I am considering applying for a CDL and I am intending to work in the EU after I complete my course (one of the basic eligibility criterias for the CDL) but I wanted to know how long I would be tied to working in the UK, EU, EEA? Surely once you have repaid the loan, 5 yrs down the line, they cannot for example stop you from accepting a job in the US, can they?
I rang the helpline and they didn't know and I rang Barclays and they didn't know either!
Help please!0 -

I'd post your enquiry on the general Loans Board, a CDL isn't appropriate for a holiday.0 -
Hi, just been looking in to these professional and career loans today and been told I should be eligible. However on looking in a few different places I noticed that it mentions that these loans are for course fees and living expenses. whereas my course doesn't haven't any fees and I planned to use the loan to pay off some high interest credit cards to make things a bit easier while i am on my doctorate. so i would be asking for it for living expenses alone - do you know anything about this, whether anyone else has been sucessful doing it, or can you add any general info on top of the info you already have on your site?
thanks carlylou0 -
if you're doing a phd, there should be payable fees...... if you get a stipend then that will cover fees, but it you have a stipend, i guess a CDL wouldn't be needed....:happyhear0

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone can help with this.
In September 2010, I returned to the UK after 3 years abroad in Spain. I came back specifically to work for a year before starting a Masters program in Sep 2011 (which I now have an unconditional offer for)
In order to cover the cost of living whilst I'm studying I wanted to take out a CD Loan, however have been told that I am not eligible because I haven't been in the UK for 3 years prior to starting the course.
Although I haven't paid any utility bills during this time, I have always maintained my UK bank account and have no credit problems. I always planned to come back to the UK but have nothing official to prove it. Is there any way around this?
If not, is my only other option to take out a regular loan whilst i'm studying my masters?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. L0 -

Hi Laura
I am in a similar situation to you, I have been out of the UK for 1 year backpacking round Australia but have kept my UK bank accounts/mortgage payments/credit card payments up to date during this time.
I plan to return to the UK in Dec to start a course on 3rd Jan, so I will have to apply for my CDL while still overseas (which they said was ok to do) I am a Barclays customer any they have told me it can be done over the phone if you are already a customer (saves risk of sending paper-work for it to get 'lost' etc).
They also told me I had to be residing in the UK for the last 3 years, I told them I have effectively been on 'holiday' for a year, and still have a UK mortgage and pay council tax in the UK during this time. They said this was ok.
Perhaps you could use this route and say you have just been on holiday in Spain and all your UK accounts and credit rating is ok and up to date.
Barclays told me I they would want to see the last 3 months bank account statements including my other accounts (which are Natwest) and would need to see activity in those accounts over the last 3 months (at least 5 transactions). They also mentioned that it would be detrimental to the application if the account had been overdrawn in the last 3 months.
Hope this helps and good luck with your application for a CDL!

hi all,
I took out a CDL with Barclays before I started my college course and I am due to start repayments within the next month or so.
I have now decided to take a year out and then go to university in 2012..does anyone know if there is a way to postpone payments until the course is over, like a deferral or something.
This whole thing is causing a lot of stress and I'm tearing my hair out trying to work out what to do!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks0 -

The only acceptable reason for deferring repayments of a CDL are that you're claiming various means tested benefits or are on a training course and, even then, the maximum deferral period is 17 months.
Apart from anything else, taking a gap year and going to university in 2012 is absolutely crazy when you consider that it's going to cost you nearly £20,000 extra in fees to do so!0
