Advice needed please --son wanting to quit Uni!!

I dropped out of university after 2 years to do a job I really wanted and for a long time I was happy. However, I've now lost my job (the business closed) and I have no qualification and no hope of a decent job.
What I'm trying to say is - work on him, its just one more year and then he'll always have a good qualification to fall back on if things go wrong.
Makes me wonder.... is 26 too old to go back to uni? Can't say I'd fancy all that (extra) debt now though!

Gilly,
Sorry if i m repeating as have nt read all of the other posts through but thought that you might want to hear this.
Friend of mine works in coaching at a fairly senior level.
In that kind of profession, whilst good experience is crucial, what is needed to get the really good sports coaching jobs and other similar jobs at a higher pay rate, is qualifications. Even just the basic ones.
If he doesnt have these then he will find a glass ceiling at some stage down the line.
I'm not saying that people never get the really good jobs in this area without qualifications but it makes it much easier.
My opinion - tell him to bite the bullet and slog it out otherwise he might find that he'll regret it and need to come back and do them later.
Maybe instead of saying ' dont drop out' you could take the approach, 'how can we help you to continue'?
Also, go on the internet with him to some of the job websites which specialise in this area and look at the job descritions etc. Majority of them want qualifications. If you can guide him this way so he comes to the decision to continue himself rather than feeling pushed, he might respond better.

dinkylou got there first with my points.
The glass ceiling is very real - my OH dropped out after year 2 and is fed up with seeing no-talent idiots promoted over him for the sake of 1 year's study. we can't afford for him to go back & the chemistry dept at Brunel is now closed.
If he feels strongly about a break then really do try and persuade him to do the forms for deferral now - it's a real pain to do it later and some places can't let you back in. Whenever we have a returning student they have an easier time of it if they have told th uni what is going on rather than the status being left as "assumed withdrawn" - otherwise known as "no idea, they've not told us anything"
Talk to student welfare - but if they aren't helpful I can look at uni regulations if you need it. (most depts are the same)Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!0 -
Hi
Thanks again everyone. I have just had a call from him(after I have pointed out many points on this thread) and he has said "I am thinking maybe you are right mum and I think I am just panicking I cant do it!!!".
He has said he will go back and give it his best shot----result!!! I appreciate he may not be able to do the course and then that would be the time to call it a day!!
He says he just panicked today----I think maybe too long holidays and a fantastic time in America had something to do with it!!! I know that he would never return if he left now and he would regret it!
Thanks again

Too right. For the sake of a small bit of pain now, he'll lose out in the future if he doesn't complete the course.
A foundation degree is worthless on its own and sends employers the message that he's not up to completing a course - he needs to complete the degree for it to be really useful.0 -
Brilliant news, Gilly - I'm pleased he's decided to give it a go. :T
Like you say, if he tries it and it doesn't work, thats a different matter, but at least you know he won't be looking back in 10 years time thinking "if only...".:D
