upgrading to either HTc or iphone
It is really so baffling and I know there seems to be two separate camps on this but this is our situation:
we have the most basic phones at the mo - just about got a camera on so all of the acronyms mean nothing to us
I have been looking at iphones and the htc ddesire only because they seem to be the ones that people like.
We would like a phone that:
would replace our currently rubbish sat nav
my dh loves his music so would need to be good at that sprt of thing
i like general surfing - love the idea of the barcode scanner thingy
the kids would like to play games and prob watch stuff on their - they love youtube
took ok photos and good videos
the htc deals seems much better than iphne but I dont know which way to jump
Can anyone advise in simple non tech lang please

LOL!
In all seriousness to the OP, you need to play with both of these phones as much as possible and see what you think.
They can both do the things you are looking for, but it's really down to personal preference.
I have a 3GS and a HTC Desire. I prefer the Desire because it's alot more flexible for me. I didn't pay for the 3GS and wouldn't, as I don't think it's worth what was being asked.
Although the Desire is pretty easy to use once you get into it, I would say the iPhone is easier out of the box. It's also 'tighter' with regard to everything being more uniform as Apple closely control the content.0 -
And to confuse matters I have upgarded to a Samsungy Galaxy S on vodafone. Got the phone free on a £25pcm tarfiff. Very pleaseed with it.0

I have a HTC HD2 and like it quite a lot *BUT*
The iphone 4 is pretty impressive, I'll be honest, its got a lot of features and it's app market is unsurpassed still.
All that said, the phone I really want is the HTC Evo 4g and that is mostly because I really don't like apple software running on my PC in the background. Its not that I don't trust it, just that I can't stop it, and as such, I don't have it at all
If I could sync the iphone with my PC without any apple software, I'd get that, so if you already use itunes or have quicktime, most of what I said wont matter to you.
Also, you may not want to count out a lot of other brands, several phone companies are bringing out android phones and blackberry have some very modestly (in comparison to the iphone and other such phones) priced handsets.0 -

You won't get an Evo 4g in the UK.0 -
Oh ok - so widening my possibilities is good- gives me more choice options which may be cheaper in the long run.
The phone I get has to be simple to use - we often have to get friends round to help us with computers and I have a 3 skypephone which I am sure has all kinds of possibilities that I am still unaware of.
My brother in law mentioned something about the iphone not having real player to watch video - is this a problem? partiularly for the things the kids like watchng on youtube etc.
How do we get to play on the phones - I've never been in a phone shop do they have them all hooked up to play with?
thanks

The iPhone will be fine to watch YouTube videos on - it has an Application for that!
Many phone stores will have 'real' phones in - most stores have at least one iPhone, and 3Store often have a majority of 'real' phones for customers to try, as well as o2.The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

If you live near an Apple store you can play with their stuff for ages.
Other places should let you have a shot on the Desire, or any other phone0 -
We went for the HTC Desire and my husband loves it, kids love and I must admit I'm even thinking about getting ne on a contract and I've never had a mobile phone on a contract. It has been fairly easy touse though I'm sure we're not doing everything on that we can, we've not downloaded too many apps but the ones we have have been entertaining, my husband has set up his calendar to link to computer and email links too. We shall keep exploring but so far I'mglad we made this choice.
Dh's friend got an iphone at the same time and they both love their phones so don't know which is best from a layman's point of view but we love the HTC.
If I was to grade ourselves in knowledge of how to use phones we would probably be graded at 2 out of 10 and were' getting by with the HTC Desire if this helps anyone make a choice

Thank you everyone. I'm now trying to decide between the HTC Desire HD and the iPhone4. I too am not familiar at all with smartphones. I've never had a smartphone. please may I know if there is a manual that comes with the HTC phone? otherwise, how do i learn to use the phone? also, is it possible to browse the internet and copy and save pictures on the HTC and transfer them later to a computer? Many thanks.0
