Orange - Lowering Tarrifs?

Hi, in November last year i signed up for a new 24 month iphone contract at £40 p/m. At the time i was working and could easily afford that payment.
Now 8 months down the line i have unexpectedly came out of work and am now on benefits. While i want to keep my contract going, i would like to lower it to a more manageable amount now that im on such a low income.
Has anybody had to do anything similar? Was it easy enough, and were they understanding?
I just want to see if anybody has had experience before i call them and possibly just waste my breath

I tried to lower my tariff with orange today as im in a similar situation to yourself, but got told that they are only allowed to reduce your tariff by £5 over the life of the contract.
The people i spoke to today were very unhelpful, but I shall try again in the hope of finding someone a bit more understanding0 -
Hi Geoff and jwillid,
Sorry to hear about the circumstances of your employment, but unfortunately it is part of the contract terms that a tariff cannot be lowered until midway through its term and even then it is by one price plan only.
I know it seems harsh, and I have dealt with many of these calls, but unfortunaley we wouldn't be able to lower it more than the migration policy states.
If you find the payments difficult, and you go into arrears, you can speak to the Collections department who can set up a payment plan and put it onto a free line rental plan - however, the drawback of this is that you will still have the mobile for the remainder of the contract....but with a permanent outgoing bar on it so that you do not get yourself into any further financial difficulties, until all arrears are cleared.
It may be worth asking the CSR to call the Collections team and see what the procedure is for that.
Hope that helps,
SDW0
