Just had a one ring call on my mobile from 07034291608, could this be a ring back scam?

  • Yes it would be a scam - because all mobile phone numbers start as 077, 078 or 079

  • 070 numbers are 'Personal Numbers' . The call can be sent to any mobile or landline the owner wishes. I believe they are usually more expensive to call than mobiles but you would have to check with your telephone company to see how much they charge.

Ofcom's guidelines on the acceptable use of personal numbers are here

When I was in hospital the phone number for my bed was an 070 number, it cost a fortune to ring apparently

Yeah thats them, posted about them afew weeks ago.
    Report it to consumer direct.
Charge you minimum 50p per minute to listen to a deliberately long rambling call. They then get a cut of the phone call charges.

It's the telephone equivalent of phishing really.

    How do they charge you?

    Only if you call back.

Why does anyone call back a missed call if they don't recognise the number as that of a friend, a family member or a firm/someone they're expecting to call?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Some people have called back apparently, with or without the inducement of a free radio. The number is similar to a mobile which could be confusing.
  • It's the new method of cold calling.

How it works is you a computer dials thousands of random phone numbers and hangs up within 1 ring. The owner of the phone rings back (obviously when it's relatively convienient to them) and the call then gets auto routed to a call operator to see if you're interested in 'upgrading your mobile phone' or whatever the company is selling etc etc. This saves the company a lot of money as they don't need to have numerous phone operators sitting there ringing phone numbers that a) don't exist and b) no one answers. It saves a huge amount of time and makes the call centre extremely efficient.

I have an 07050 number. They are personal numbers and I route it to my mobile. It's my number for life. Yes callers pay more for calling the number and I don't benefit from call charges.
