2nd hand sky box insert viewing card

Options
Hi,

My old sky box packed up, so I bought a second hand sky box which is supposed to be in full working order. When I plugged the new box everything seemed and it connected to sky. However, when I try to view any Sky channel, it says "Insert your Sky viewing card". I have tried taking the card out and replacing it again. Is there some form of set up I should be doing or have I got a duff box?

The old sky box is a Thomson and the new one is an Amstrad.

The card needs to be paired with the box. For the FTA channels, you shouldn't need any viewing card at all.

  • How do you pair the card with the box?

You will need to ring Sky and give them all of the details of the card and the replacement Sky Receiver.

I think, im not sure, but think Sky send this error message to stop people buying second hand boxes, we recently had Sky in for a multiroom box install and i saw the engineer pairing the box, via a little hand held device, when i asked him, he said we have to do this now, it stopes people buying a replacement sky box on the cheap !

Try giving Sky a call, they may do it over the phone, but i think its just a way of them making more money, making sure they only let you use boxes that they have supllied !!!

It really does amaze me some of the stuff sky installers (they are not engineers) come out with! It is not for anything of the sort. It has always been in place to stop you taking the card out and going round your mates to watch the match for example when he dosnt subscribe to sky sports but you do.

As for auto pairing, that only works when it is a scheduled card change over like the recent blue card to white card switch. Any other time you have to contact sky.

    Utter rubbish.
  • I rang Sky. They talked me through a few steps which involved going to the services page and rebooting. They sent a code to the box through the phone and the box now works. Thanks for your help.
