Do o2 charge to send texts with codes in?

Not a very snappy title but best I could do!
I recently bought a new pay & go phone from o2. Being an existing customer I queried the need to buy £10 top-up and was told they would check my details and it shouldn't be necessary for me to buy the top-up.
Assistant asks for my number and enters it on system. After several attempts I get at least 5 texts to my phone with codes in. Give one of the codes to the assistant, who enters it on screen and confirms I don't have to buy the top-up.
No mention that I'd be charged for the text but I seem to have lost about £2.50 credit that I can't otherwise account for. Best guess is I've been charged 50p each for the texts they sent me.
Does anyone know if there's normally a charge for these texts? Wouldn't have minded one (though would have been nice to be told) but obviously not happy about getting so many!

Some text short code numbers are free, and normally such network specific messages as you seem to be describing would be free.
If you're sure that this is what generated the charges, it would be worth a query hoping for a refund0 -
Can you check your account online? If not, ask customer services to look at your calls to see what could have caused it.0

Thanks for the replies. Have emailed customer services. The 1st attempt faltered on them thinking I was claiming to have been charged for replying to texts they sent me.
Clarified that and had another email saying "I'm sorry you're getting charged for receiving premier text messages. I'll quickly help you out. I'm pleased to tell you that I've forwarded your query to our support team. You'll be contacted within five working days with a resolution."
Not sure about the reference to "premier" texts but I'll see what happens. Assume they can tell me how I spent the credit if they insist it wasn't because of the texts they sent me.
As far as I know I've never been able to see details of how I've spent my credit online although I noticed a link today saying "New - view mobile bill/balance". Currently coming up with a "not accessible" message when I click it though.0
