retailer vs manufacturer
If I were to install a firmware on a smartphone other than the one provided by the network, in this case the retailer, I will obviously void their warranty. Where would this leave me with the manufacturer if any problems occur down the line as I thought it is the retailer responsible for arranging repairs under the manufacturer warranty or can you take the device direct to the manufacturer for repair?

If you flash with any kind of 'custom firmware' you'll void any warranty with anyone.
The manufacturer won't touch it as you've installed none approved firmware. Which isn't a problem as long as you can flash it back to the way it was, the only time you get a real problem is when the phone fails in such a way that you can't reflash it. . .0
