    You subsidise what exactly? Most people who work on a farm and have kids are subsidised more than they subsidise.

    In fact, your housing is being subsidised, all the time you live in an affordable house whilst being able to afford to move, you are stopping someone living there who is more than likely being given a top-up by the council for the private rental they are in.

    ?????? Surely the British way is to give to the needy? A la council housing :p

    PS I know for a fact that most posters on here are subsidising me to a point by paying for my children's education and healthcare, the whole point is though that they grow up and hopefully contribute more to the central pot than they received whilst growing up.

  • WRONG I have many self employed friends all had to go to the sub prime market then transfer to a high st lender 1-2 years down the line nothing to do with tax fiddle rubbish.

    With over 20 years experience within a major High Street bank as an adviser how qualified are you to say I'm wrong?

    High Street Lenders look at net profit to assess affordability whether undeclared legitimately by running car, loan interest costs through the books or having family member (wife) on books as "secretary" on basic tax rate level or illegitimately by not fully declaring cash sales/deals effectively reduced borrowing capacity.

    Provided SE applicants had 2/3 years accounts with progressive earnings and could afford loan there was no reason we wouldnt lend.

    How many of your friends actually tried to apply through normal sources initially or relied on the "pub expert" for advice? If I got a £1 for every time I heard the words "my mate said....." I would be a very rich person.

I am now what a silly thing to say how are they subsidised working on a farm? I do not work in agriculture it is the farmers who own in excess of 150 acre who are subsidised not the workers .

Why would they want to go from private rent to council or association rent ?most private tenants rent is topped up or they are in reciept of some type of benefit.

    No one in my or my wife's family have been on the dole all actually own homes or rent , I would say We contribute more to the pot now even living in as you say a subsidised home.What we contribute exceeds the small rental saving.

    My Dad's been self-employed all his working life, and always had prime mortgages.

    Sorry mate I would not listen to a bank adviser it was a bank adviser that told me do not bother with that business, yes right proved wrong on that one wasn't he . YOU go to the banks now which is what we are talking about you will not get a mortgage, it has been like this for the last 3-4 years and for you to say people are on the fiddle is a bit like me saying you banking idiots are why the country hasn':mad:t got a pot to

    AND???????????Point is if he wants one now would he get one with out a massive deposit? and as for all his working life the so called bank adviser says he could have got one on the high street so why has your father been paying through the nose ? my friends got them and then changed to high street asap

    I am trying to move back to the town I was born in. Why? Because both myself and my partner work in the town, and my son starts secondary school there in September. We don't want to stay where we are in the next city because the school he was allocated is the worst school in the city. We didn't put his name down for it, there are 3 secondary schools closer, all of which we put his name down for, and all of which he didn't get in to. We had deliberately moved to where we currently are because I was told he was in the catchment area for a fairly decent school.
    So, now we have to move. However, the problem is, Nato are moving in to an area close by and all 3 bed houses at a reasonable price are gone before I can even view them.I have always privately rented or owned, but now I have no choice but to apply for housing. What chance do I have? This week one house is available in the whole of the town. As I am not classed as emergency, there are an awful lot of people above me in the queue for this. I accept I am not an emergency case, but I am pretty hacked off that I am in a no win situation. I can't buy as we both work, but earn less than £40k a year between us. A mortgage of £120k will get us diddly squat. The only private rentals are over £1000 per month, and there is no social housing available to me.
    So what do I do? and whose fault is it?
    Yes, it is my fault as I choose not to send my son to an under achieving school where the pass rate for GCSE's last year was under 30%.
    But the lack of affordable rents both social and private is something that needs to be addressed and the difference in rents is astounding. A private rental costs £1000 per month, yet the one house available this week is on at a rental of £82 a week. Something somewhere has gone horribly wrong!!!

    Cheltenham, and before you say but there are loads on rightmove for £700 plus, they are not there! When I phone the letting agents, they have already gone. The only efficient letting agent appears to be Alex Clark as they now e-mail me before they appear on Rightmove. The problem is that when you work you cant just take any old viewing time, it has to fit in with work, and by the time my viewing slot comes around in 2 days time, the house will have gone - If it hasn't, I have to give a months notice on the house I am in, so then the letting agents will pick the person who will move in quickest, and I lose out again. Still, it means life isn't boring:)
