Worth a look is the devere at Crewe. They are a business hotel and so empty in school holidays etc. Lots of rooms from £10 for a very nice hotel..http://www.devere.co.uk/common/room.availability.
Breakfast is £7.50 for adults and children eat free.

I've stayed at the Alton Towers resort hotel, and while its very nicely themed etc, I personally wouldn't stay onsite if my main reason for going was to go to the theme park.
The park opens at 10am for rides, and the rides stay open until official park closing time. So even if you have a 30-minute drive from your offsite hotel, you still don't have to set off on your journey til after 9am, and you're not going to be arriving back at night very late.
Just think how many souvenirs and meals etc you can have in the theme park for that extra £200 .

We are staying at the Crewe Barthomley travelodge next time we go, its about 40 mins away but better than the very long drive home, lol, means we get two days there. We booked two family rooms for £25 each.

Just an update to say the Crewe Barthomley Travelodge gets a thumbs up from us, nice clean rooms, staff were friendly and helpful, parking is right in front of the building. We will probably re book to stay there again.
