Dalaman, Turkey Currency?

Peanuts
I have read some threads etc and am still confused about the currency to take to Dalaman. I am staying at the Club Alla Turca. Is it best to go with Sterling/Euros or Turkish Lire? Am I right in thinking travellers cheques arent recommended?
Also, I take it I need 4 x £10 for entry to Turkey for 2 adults and 2 children?
HELP!!!

yep you all need a £10 note for your visa
i take about £50 of lira and the rest in cash that i change over there as you get a better rate
also if you have a nationwide flex account withdrawals are free from cash machines at the moment
i wouldnt take travellers cheques.0 -

Ellieo has it right. I do the same. I take about £50 in Lira and then change up the rest in Turkey because of the better rate of exchange.
Don't take travellers cheques, they are too hard to change over and the queues for the banks are ridiculous!
Have fun!0 -
Another one who just takes a few quid worth of Lira, then changes sterling over there.
Don't bother with Euro's. You'll lose out on the exchange rate when you buy them here and again when you buy things over there. Here I go again on my own....0 -
We went to Turkey a couple of years ago (2008) and stayed in Marmaris, we made the mistake of taking about £600 worth of Turkish Lira then found it unecasary, Stirling and Euros are accepted just about everywhere, even the cash machines will give euros or Lira. As mentioned you need to pay £10 striling for your Visa Stamp at Dalaman airport.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0

Hi
I don't know where you are based but make sure you have an english £10 note. We flew from glasgow and someone ahead of us seemed to be having trouble with the £10 visa. According to someone in the (very long) queue they only had scottish notes. Don't know if it was true or not but better to be safe than stuck at the airport!0 -
Alla TurcA IS GORGEOUS !!!! We stayed there and Dalyan is stunning. Watch the prices there, you pay for things at the end of your stay so be aware of what you are using, there are some fab places to visit, if you want any info just pm me i'll be glad to help0

If you're planning on doing any amount of shopping, ££ can be used to grab you some really good deals.
When I went to Turkey in 2005, I took all Lira. I kicked myself, because I discovered that in most shops [from street vendors to official shopping malls], an item that costs, say 20 Lira could be bought for £5 [then, a Lira was officially worth about 40p, but bargaining hard enough could effectively make 1 Lira worth about 30p!]. The official exchange rate is now similar to what it was when I visited.
The street vendors in particular would damn near rip your arm off for pounds, Euros or dollars. You're also in a good position with ££ if you use taxis, book day trips, undertake activities on the beach, etc.
You can spend £1 coins, but I wouldn't fancy your chances of getting coins in your change. Therefore it might be a good idea to take a bag of £1's, and a fair amount of £5 notes.
Whatever currency you carry, keep in mind the fact that Turkey is perhaps the best place in 'Europe' for haggling. It's incredibly fun to do [and entertaining to watch], and written prices are purposely inflated on the assumption that tourists will drive a hard bargain.
The old trick of turning your back on the salesman and pretending to walk out of the shop really can work
Yes, you will need a tenner each to gain entry. Expect a bit of a queue at the airport whilst everybody pays up.
Also, Dalaman airport is a bit shabby, with limited facilities and extremely expensive food. It'd be a good idea to be well fed and watered before you make your return trip to the airport.

i would second that about Dalaman airport, make sure you take some food with you on the way back in case you get delayed, it is mega expensive and there isn't a lot there once you go through check in, i think we were delayed a few hours and we went to get a McDonalds and a burger and fries were about £7 :eek:0

We took only Lira with us when we went to the Alla Turca and did not use any English money at all0
