Argos (Old appliance collection)

Hi people,

We've just taken delivery of a new tumble dryer from Argos, when we ordered it on the website, we clicked the only button to add 'Collection Of Old Appliance' to the order.

When the drivers turned up this morning, I mentioned the old one is in the kitchen unplugged and ready only to be informd they had no paperwork to pick it up.

Have just phoned customer services and was told it was MY FAULT for entering the incorrect code. I asked how this is possible when I clicked the only button available to add the option to my order and all they said is that I put in the code for 'Direct Delivey'????(Whatever that is).

All they have offered is to reimburse the £7.50 collection charge. Do I have to accept this or do they have to collect the old appliance as this was my original order?

Do you have email confirmation of the collection, if not id just accept the collection charge and go somewhere else to recycle it
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • Do not sweat, you have your refund. Why not give the local council a ring to arrange collection or try you 'charity' collectors, who may help
  • Do you have email confirmation of the collection, if not id just accept the collection charge and go somewhere else to recycle it

Yes, its listed on the email confirmation of the order.

@Freddie The only problem with the council is that they'll charge me £25 to take it away

In that case, I would get Argos to fulfill their obligation to you, as you have already paid for it.

Bob, are you sure your council charges £25 to take away white goods? I know our council levies a charge but only for non-household items e.g. building rubble

Scrap that! A quick Google search shows that a lot of councils do charge!! How are we ever supposed to encourage recycling if Councils charge exorbitant amounts like this

If you old Tumble dryer is still working, I would take the £7-50 back and put it on the freecycle network at http://www.freecycle.org/. It is free to join as well as use and someone will quickly pick up your Tumble dryer.

If it isn't working, I would insist that Argos honours it's commitment.

They will collect free of charge twice a year if you are on certain benefits, i had to get rid of my washing machine that the removal men destroyed (thats another story).

I rang them, arranged a time slot, and they asked which benefits i was on, took my NI number to check.

the night before DS and OH took the washing machine and put it out where it was arranged to be, and within 10 mins a scap van stopped and took it, i did tell them not to as it was being collected, but he said it's ok i don't charge.

I was more worried of what he was going to do with it, i didn't have time to ask to see his licence.

So had to call the council to stop them coming to collect the washing machine.

Look in your local paper, there are people that will happily collect your old appliances and you might get something for it if it is still working.

Should also add that it won't cost you anything for the person to pick it up via freecycle.

Even if it is not working put it on Freecycle. There are lots of people who buy knackered white goods, strip them and sell the scrap metal.

Apparently it is good money for the drums.
