  • Keystone, what do you mean by materials? Our quote doesn't include the suite or vanity units or anything - we are providing that. It does include all the usual bits and bobs like widgets, grout etc though.

Yes I mean all the usual bits and pieces: copper pipe, fittings, valves, plasterboard, wedi/hardiebacker board, timber, WPB ply for the floor, adhesive and grout, paint, screws etc etc etc etc. Easily run up to 400 or 500.

I would not expect it to include suite, furniture, tiles but I would expect it to include everything else. The point is that you have a quote which includes these items the OP doesn't and may be in for a shock down the track. A Labour price on its own is insufficient.

having been given a full refit price that (your price) sounds fine for labour -assuming you know 'something' about the team...mine's come in at £4K + cost of tiles but I'm paying for suite etc in that and then tiles on top with a highly recommended firm of plumbers.

Does the labour quote include ripping out and disposing of the old suite/tiles ?

To avoid any doubt (I'm a belt and braces sort of girl), I would get an itemised quote to show what's included and what's NOT, and as another poster says, clarify if it's for the whole job regardless of how long it takes, or for the no. of hours/days they estimate it will take.

and not a charge for 5 days. If it takes longer than 5 days then the fitter may say "really sorry it took me 6 days so you'll need to pay me an extra day"...If he's light on work he may spin it out to ensure more money and work.

A quote is a quote (albeit that it will probably include a caveat about unforseen circumstances arising). An estimate is a different kettle of fish entirely and if the OP has an estimate then you are both correct. If he has a quote which is the word he used he doesn't need to care.

    See the point now?
Yes - you may not understand the difference between a quote and an estimate. :D

    I understand the difference alright.

you wouldn't ask what I was suggesting then?
You'd wait until the end then argue it out?

I understand it, the OP understands it, you understand it....but you're assuming the fitter understands too. While most will, it's a gamble that can be avoid by asking that simple question.
It also clarifies the situation prior to starting.....and that's NEVER a bad idea.

LoL - didn't the :D sorta indicate I was pulling your leg? No? Oh! Don't be so sensitive.

Thats just silly - he shouldn't be trading if he doesn't and everything should be in writing anyway to protect both sides on a project like this so there is no gamble at all.
It also clarifies the situation prior to starting.....
Which shouldn't be necessary if everything is in writing...
and that's NEVER a bad idea.
agreed but there is really no need to shout.
