We operate in a similar way too, but we have other accounts in other banks also. Soon to change though, as we are about to amalgamate them against our offset mortgage, will probably end up with joint, two seperates and hubby may insist on keeping Cahoots(why, cos he likes them - he say....).

Nice to know the difference approaches on employing several current accounts. I currently only have one but will apply for another one for backup and credit profiling. Cheers!

Is it easy to get more than one current account? Whenever I looked into a new account in the past (I am with HSBC and not getting much benefit from being with them) the application process asked about other accounts, and seemed to be saying that they would automatically close the old account when the new one was opened.

They will certainly offer to (and try to pursuade you to let them) "help you" switch accounts but you don't have to let them do it. They can't close down an account at another bank without your permission anyway...

Just wondering if lloydstsb will let me have a second account. I want to keep my graduate account and get an interest paying account also. I will do the salary and bills in the graduate and pay into the new one by standing order for spending. Anyone done this with lloyds?

The only thing that may stop you is if the bank/financial institution requires that a minimum amount of money is deposited in the account each month.

LloydsTSB ( or any other bank) will let you have a second account as long as total credit per month rule is adhered to.There should be no problem with this.

I get around the 'transfer a minimum amount' problem by d.d. it from my husband's account to satisfy my bank, then I d.d. it into the joint account where all our bills get paid from (and where the money would have gone anyway). So long as the bank sees the minimum money going in each month, it's happy - and all three accounts are with the same bank - it's like a 'round robin'.;)

  • I'm taking advantage of Lloyds TSB's 50 quid to open a new current account - but am leaving my old account (with FD) open (a) in case Lloyds turn out to be useless, (b) for all monthly DDs to help me budget better and (c) as a backup for emergencies.

Makes sense to me - wish I'd thought of it sooner! Lloyds asked me why I wasn't closing my other account and I gave them the reasons above and they accepted that without question.

??????? I thought the offer was £30 to open a new account, or have they changed it?

I switched from Halifax to Lloyds a few months ago and they did the whole take-over thing ... switching DD's etc ... and were supposed to close my Halifax account once the process was complete. However, I got a letter from Halifax asking for me to return my cards/cheque books etc before the could close my acc, which I never did, so that account is still active. I haven't actually used it since but it still has a few quid in that would have transferred to Lloyds on completion. Lloyds have never queried me about it either.

As far as I know there are no stipulations to credit my account every month and I've had this account almost 20 years now and left it sitting idle for almost 3 years at one point previously with no problems. In fact the reason I stopped using it was because they had added charges to my account for an unpaid DD that I had previously cancelled and I refused to pay them, so my account sat overdrawn by £75 for over 2 years until they decided to wipe the debt off :D
