Does beta 3 support lots more extensions than did beta 2?

    I doubt it.
It's up to each developer to update their addons, sometimes they probably hold back until Firefox is nearer to release proper.

    Rather a sniffy reply?!
I use the Google Toolbar because I make a lot of use of Google Maps and Google Images, which are buttons on this toolbar. Yes, I could do the same thing with bookmarks. But I don't.

You could use Google Shortcuts. This allows one onobtrusive button with a drop-down list of all Google services. Not sure if it works with 4Beta as I won't use Beta's either.

This is a BETA release, so it's there for early adopters and testing only; there's no use complaining that it isn't the finished product.

Style, behaviour may change as a result of feedback, so developers may not wish to update their add-ons for an unfinished release.

Pretty average. Mozilla are going to lose a lot of market share to Google with this release. Will they be able to stem the loss, probably not.
Does a free product have market share?

I consider the google/yahoo/whatever toolbars to be a nuisance; I want as little of my space as possible taken up by window gubbins.

Of course it does, and when you're talking about web browsers nearly the entire market is made up of free products (with the arguable exception of IE since I think the license states you need a licensed Windows OS to use it)

Yes, of course they do. It's also in Mozilla's interest to have as many internet users chosing their browser as their primary one because the most significant source of income that Mozilla have have is through the deal with Google for including their search engine as the default choice.

Firefox still lacks the beautiful looks of Opera IMHO:-(

One excellent and oh-so-simple option found in Opera is a 'stop executing scripts on this page' checkbox for JavaScript. It's probably easier to illustrate how a couple of lines of Javascript can make Firefox (and most other browsers for that matter) fall down flat on their faces with a simple and controlled example:

    http://www.elblowfly.org.uk/scripts/javascript.php
(you may need to be familiar with the three finger salute for this one - CTRL-ALT-DEL)

I'm sure the seasoned hands here have seen this kind of thing before. Personally I'd like to see browsers fitted with a simple 'Kill flash/Kill Javascript' button myself - just because of this common browser weakness.

Whilst I love and advocate Opera (http://www.opera.com/) I do find occasional issues with some sites - usually not because it lacks anything, but because lame web developers do half a job and fail to identify it.
You sounded very impressed with Opera, so decided to download it. Still finding my way around but very happy so far. Certainly a very lot quicker that i.e.8. Have been using Firefox but have encountered many problems over the last few weeks & decided to uninstall.
