Sky cancellation

I am very unhappy with sky since my switch from virgin.
Firstly, I was charged for HD that I didnt want or request. When I spoke to them they didnt believe I said I didnt want it and threatend to listen to the phone call. I told them that was fine as I knew what I had said.
They rang back and said okay, we will cancel it. But charged me £80 for it to be cancelled.
I told them over the phone I wanted everything cancelled. Two seperate people said okay. Today, they know nothing about it. One person says it wont go through as they have not recieved a written letter, and one said I cannot cancel at all for another 9 months.
The internet and customer service as been shocking. If I write a letter, will they cancel? Also, what do I say in the letter?

You can cancel anytime you like, but you will have to pay an early termination fee which will be the equivalent to seeing out your minimum term (presumably 1 year). If there is a problem with the service then you need to give them the chance to fix it.No free lunch, and no free laptop
