I bought the original tom tom go and it was fine for 6 or 7 years until the battery got knackered. Replaced it this year with a Garmin 1490t which I think is great. These days you get a lot more features at a fraction of the cost. I now enjoy widescreen display, slimmer unit, latest map, free traffic updates, bluetoothe and much much better points of interest info. There are other features that I doubt I will ever have use of too. All this for a third of the price 7 years ago.
I'm not saying that Garmin is better though as I'm sure tom tom have most/all of this too. Quite simply the Garmin was better value at the time. One thing I do miss about the tom tom though is the route summery map you get after plotting the route. When on a long trip it makes it easy to check it's going to take you the way you want to go.
Have a good scout round though, it is a very competitive market.0 -
Depends if you want traffic, many Garmins come with lifetime traffic subscription, and dedicated traffic pages so you can search for likely hold ups in the vicinity of your route not just on it, experience tells us that a motorway closure or hold up will soon affect roads for miles around but may not show up as a delay on your route.
Edit, i have the same Garmin as Nanker the 1490t, very pleased with it and simple enough for anyone.0
