I've stayed in the Winston.
Without a doubt cheap and cheerful.
Good place if you are with a big group of people and partying.
However not the best place, for say a family.

and what's wrong with that

For an excellent standard I an recommend the American Hotel, or the Sofitel.
Enjoy!! We are going for a weekend before Christmas
Life is sometimes a bit pants but occasionally you can wear your french knickers!

Eminem stays here when in amsterdam as did a heroin addled Quentin Tarentino when he wrote pulp fiction ie it's a pretty lively place!0 -
Ermmm 'just another sleaze hotel' Maybe not what we are looking for, but thanks for the reply;)
Will check out the Sofitel, Amstel & American also
Do you reckon prices will come down as it get closer to departure? Or best booking straight away?0 -
I think that’s a very apt description of the Winston! You might want to look at where the sights are on a map before booking a room, but then pretty much everywhere is within walking distance. Generally if a hotel has low season prices they'll be advertised; while you can always get some form of last minute accommodation personally I'd get a room reserved asap to ensure your preferred place isn't booked up for the weekend.
By the way you can completely avoid 'the sleaze' quite easily in Amsterdam but if you do want a safe way of exploring the red light area there are a few walking tours - I can recommend this one:

Despite the name it's quite an informative and lighthearted tour - 'Roy' is actually an american named Kimberley.0 -
Stayed in one of the Ramadas.
We got a good deal from venere.com, but I'd always recommend using https://www.hotelscomparison.com0 -
I think you can take the Winston's reference to sleazy with a pinch of salt. When we were there there were also people of all ages, young and old, but certainly no sign of sleaze. Honestly.Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0

In fairness it did recently change hands so the reputation of the 'old' Winston should not be automatically applied to it's current incarnation. I guess it's strengths are it's weakneses - it's very close to alot of bars and is on the outer rim of the red light area - depending on the individual that may appeal or not.0
