Unlocking iphone

You could do it yourself without the support of O2.
This can be achived by doing a "jailbreak" process which has recently been confirmed as legit. Once the handset is then "jailbroken" multiple options become available to unlock the device.
I'd be happy to run you through the process if you wish.0 -

jailbroken phones are able to access lots of third party apps phone still works the same.apple issue updates but you do not update it until the jailbreak has also been updated.
if you set up wifi on your iphone and type www.jailbreakme.com in safari and follow the insruction you can jailbreak direct off the handset.
once done cydia will install you can then install ultrasn0w from there to unlock, done mine today no problems.i have had mine jailbroken since i first had them my old 3g and new 3gs never had any problems0 -

This guy sums it up nicely.
Jailbreak from that website.
Launch and update Cydia when prompted.
Search for ultrasn0w, and install.
Reboot phone... unlocked.0 -
You lose any warranty and can't make use of new apple software and features.
Your at the mercy of bedroom programmers its for anti establishment geeks! In my opinion.

If you want it unlocked, for a charge and have to wait a few days then O2 can do it...0 -

you will only lose warranty if you take jailbroken phone in for repair,if you do itunes restore then they cannot tell it has been done i have had my 3gs replaced under warranty girl at genius bar plugged it in and did not know it was jailbroken previously.dont forget the OP has purchased a used 3g anyway so no warranty.
you can use apples new software and features just need to wait a while longer until the hackers come up with new jailbreak, the one for ios4 has been done a while but they were holding off as there was so much talk of updates on ios4 we are at 4.0.1 currently with 4.1 widely expected to be released imminently, this is the reason jailbreak has taken a while to come ou this time.
i do not think o2 will unlock it as it needs to be the original owner who calls, aprt from jailbreak there are some companies who unlock these things just google it and choose which is best for you.0 -

I'll put even money that anything you do Apple has already done on a test iPhone and they probably already know how to detect jailbreaking.
They'll also be working on ways to stop it being done.
I know the people who write the jailbreaking software are extremly talented, but so at the Apple tech's and they have access to all the source code and hardware they want without reverse coding it all. It's not out of the realms of possibility Apple could have put in a blowable fuse in the chips (like microsoft did with the 360) so that once it's jailbroken the fuse is blown and thats it, it's detectable.
Whether Apple would care as they have previously only sold subsidised phones rather than Sim Free and the Carrier will have to bear some of the repair costs, and if that applies to newer sim free phones is another matter.0
