I would honestly be surprised if you insurance policy pays out on this, but you never know.
It was not your accident but a brick from a lorry went through your radiator? I am confused0 -

It was clear that the accident was not mine but on route, also I don't think they would have asked for an RAC or AA report if it was an accident i was involved in.
How can it be my responsibility to allow for accidents? how long extra should i leave for an accident? 30 mins, 40 mins an hour or like the other day on the m25 people where stuck in there cars for over 2 hours? What happens if there are two accidents?
I agree breakdowns should not be covered unless its out of the normal I.E. we where driving to Liverpool and half a brick from a lorry went through the bumper and through the radiator.
If you have a Gatwick flight that involves the M25 you leave LOADS of extra time.
Of course its your responsibility.0 -
Depends on how important it is you get there.how long extra should i leave for an accident? 30 mins, 40 mins an hour or like the other day on the m25 people where stuck in there cars for over 2 hours? What happens if there are two accidents?
If it's a wedding or meeting a cruise ship or a very expensive holiday or an interview etc. then it's quite important.
Another factor is the route.
If it's something like the M25 where you can experience holdups for several hours then you need to take that into account.
I would allow several hours and if everything is going fine, I'd stop for lunch/dinner when I had passed enough time or risk points (M4/M25 interchange??) to be confident I could dispnse with some of the contingency.
If that means getting up too early - get a room and do the travelling the day before - then you have time to deal with any problems.
Because it's a normal and expected part of everyday life (especially on the M25) , as is breakdowns. How can it be my responsibility to allow for accidents?
It's not totally unexpected and you can take measures to make sure you still get there on time (like travelling the day before and staying overnight).
I've never missed anything but have come close twice when there were multiple holdups.
In the latter case the cruise ship would have waited as there would have been lots of people delayed and they knew about the traffic problems.0 -
The Brick through the radiator was an example.
How can you be responsible for other peoples actions? and how long is loads?
Just out of interest i took this from Thomas cooks travel insurance
3. an accident or breakdown occurring ahead of You on a motorway or dual
carriage way which causes an unexpected delay to the vehicle in which You
are travelling
So I would assume what the woman told me was correct I just need proof.
Update
The Highways Agency have helped me, I gave them the details and they will send me a letter with all delays on it.
Suppose a backup from the AA or RAC would be nice i have emailed them.0 -

That sounds like a generous policy you have, very good. Hope they pay out.
I only got confused because before the "lorry and brick" story you put IE, which I took to mean i.e. whereas in actual fact what you meant was e.g.0 -

You have to behave reasonably in the scenario.
This is all contextual so you can't expect definitive answers.
But if a 1 hour hold up on the M25 is not unusual and 2 hours happens occassionally then I'd want to add more than 2 hours.
It all depends on the type of road road, the time of day (rush hour?) etc.
Also the season, roadworks tend to be done in good weather but bad driving conditions can also hold you up.which causes an unexpected delay
I very much hope they are reasonable with you.
But theorectically they could argue that a 30 minute delay (for example) is not unexpected.
Now is when you find out how good they are.0 -

I did mean I.E. because it happened to us a few years back.
Id tend to agree with you about the 30 mins...... I was held up for over an hour
