Have you asked your insurers what type of information they need?

Would news reports suffice to show there was an accident about the time and place of your travel?

Contact the police in the area in which the accident happened?

If you contact the AA or RAC they may well have archived data

Ditto the BBC local radio station for the area - their websites have live traffic info as well

You mean someone elses accident (I think).

Do they think you meant your own accident?

Because there is a big difference.
I can't see travel insurance covering you for being late due to traffic.....

My feeling was the same, but it hadn't occured to me that they might mis-interpret it.
It's your responsibility to get there on time knowing that breakdown or accident could and do occur.
I always make sure I have enough time to get their if the car breaks down completely and we have to wait for recovery plus alternative transport.
Sometimes this means travelling the night before.

In practice what I often do is wait until most of the journey is completed (most of the risk has gone) and then stop for lunch/meal.
This did backfire once, when we stopped an hour for lunch and then had a terrible journey to Southampton due to a football match AND accidents, but it does minimise the risk and works most of the time, so it's generally an acceptable trade-off.
  • Indeed I meant Live!

It was clear that the accident was not mine but on route, also I don't think they would have asked for an RAC or AA report if it was an accident i was involved in.

How can it be my responsibility to allow for accidents? how long extra should i leave for an accident? 30 mins, 40 mins an hour or like the other day on the m25 people where stuck in there cars for over 2 hours? What happens if there are two accidents?

I agree breakdowns should not be covered unless its out of the normal I.E. we where driving to Liverpool and half a brick from a lorry went through the bumper and through the radiator.

Read your policy carefully. Many state that you are covered for an accident "in which YOUR car was involved". No mention of someone else's accident.
