I need some advice about PAC codes and keeping my number!

Ok, here goes!
I am currently on an iphone contract with o2 which has now ran out. I want to upgrade to the iphone4 and I have decided to get it through Tesco mobile. I want to keep my same mobile number.
I have already requested my PAC Code.
My local tesco tells me they may have a supply of iphones coming on today. Yay!
All good so far!
Here is my dilemma. I work away on a North Sea oil rig and l leave tomorrow. Very often I don't get a mobile signal out there at all. However, I still call in using a landline and check my voicemails by using my pin number.
I am worried that if I start the transfer of my number thing but am out of the country and unable to connect either of my phones that something might go wrong. I use the mobile number for another business I am involved with and I can't lose it! I also need to be able to access my voicemail whilst I am away.
Can anyone seeing any of this being an issue?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Dave

Shouldn't be a problem. The charges go through via text updates to the phones (sims). The transfer will go through at the networks and the updates will go out. If you're out of range the updates will just wait until your phone comes within range and then get sent.
The only problem might be if you're out of range for a long time. The updates, like texts, have an expiry date (or the network servers would clog up with messages that can't be delivered). So if you're out of range for weeks you might have to have them resend the updates. You won't lose your number as it'll be changed on the network...0 -
Hi, thanks for the response Jon, that makes me feel a lot better!
Just to clarify, did you mean the changes (not charges) will be sent via text messages?
It's possible I could be out of range for 2 weeks. Often I can pick up a Norway signal out there but not always. What about being able to access my number to collect voicemail whilst all of this is going on? I still need people to be able to call my normal number and leave a voice message on there that I can call into using a landline to collect. Should that still work ok during this process, even if I can't access a signal for 2 weeks?0 -
Sorry !! Typing too fast for my own good there !
Yes, the changes to the sim go through via text updates. The number will change on the network so I guess you'll be able to pickup those via landline. I'd make a call to Tesco just to be sure in case there's something that doesn't 'click over' until the sims updated (but I doubt it).0 -
Hi Jon!
Sounds good to me! It's funny, for some reason, I seem to trust advice form real people on here rather than anything the people at Tesco might have to say! Lol!
I guess the only issue might be this. I currently have my own pin code with O2 to access my voicemails when I have no phone signal. When it switches over to Tesco I guess the pin code will change. I wonder if that can be set up whilst my phone is off and I'm out of the country?
Part of me is thinking I might be best to get the phone today but maybe leave the number switch over until I get back...?0 -
I'd check what the system is for Tesco. I can't see it being the same as O2, and yes, your old pin won't work, all that moves to Tesco is the number.
Just checked and found this "Dial your Tesco number from another line, when you hear the voicemail
prompt press * and enter your PIN. "
So all you need to do is set a new pin with Tesco and you're set. . .0
