Vodafone change billing terms

Has anyone else looked at their latest Vodafone mobile phone bill. I noticed that my bill suddenly doubled, from being around £60 per month to £122 in July. I phoned Vodafone and was told that they had changed the service charge billing dates. Instead of the service charge/line rental being billed for the 1st July to 30th July, they had changed this to 1st July to 21st August. My next bill apparently will now cover the period 21st August to 22nd September. My question to them was 'why?'. The answer - because they were getting lots of calls on the 1st of every month!!!!

I have complained and asked for a real explanation - although technically I'm not paying anymore - I am now being billed in advance and will only ever recoup this at the end of the contract - which I will now firmly stick to.

  • I complained and was given £5 as a good will gesture. I was wondering if they've broken the terms of the contract as they gave absolutely no notice and the bill date to the collection date is less than 30 days.

I believe they have to give notice of such changes under the direct debt guarantee. Assuming you pay by DD that it.
The direct debit guarantee applies to all banks and building societies taking part in the direct debit scheme. It says that:

If there is a change in the amount to be paid or the payment date, the person receiving the payment (the originator) must notify the customer in advance.

If the originator or the bank/building society makes an error, the customer is guaranteed a full and immediate refund of the amount paid.

Customers can cancel a direct debit at any time by writing to their bank or building society
