I have a set of stainless steel Aga saucepans which I can't recommend enough. I bought them in the sale at Christmas time, set of 3 for £125 I think. Expensive but worth their weight in gold (we don't have an Aga either). They cook evenly, come up sparking with hot water and a dish brush (even curry, spagbol etc) and you can stick them in the oven if needs be. The saute pan is on the Christmas list for this year :)

Don't mean to hijack the thread but can anyone help:

I'm looking for a new colander. I have a plastic one (years old and falling apart) but it has a single, longish handle (like a saucepan). I find it so useful to hold one-handed. I'm currently using my metal sieve most of the time 'cos all the ones I've seen in the shops have two small handles. Anyone seen any with one handle, must be dishwasherproof? TIA

Yes managed to pick one up in France on holiday and then flipping well left it behind at the villa.

I know exactly what you mean though, I have been without a colander now for several months since mine died. Also the ones in the shops (without the handles) seem quite small and with a family of 5 I needed a larger one.

So, if you were starting again with these items, what would you buy? What are your favourite, totally indespensable items? I'm just not sure what's best, and I want to buy stuff that will last well.

A big Le Creuset pot that goes from top to oven.

A couple of Le Creuset dishes, large & med.

Oxo Good Grips hand tools - love them.

    Circulon saucepans

    Lock & lock plastic boxes.

If anyone is looking for a good baking tray for cookies etc, the best one I've ever used is this one from Lakeland. I bought one months ago and have wished ever since that I had two - today I caved in and bought a second one.

They are quite pricey but I've never managed to get anything to stick to them, despite never lining or greasing them. I bake all sorts of cookies as well as home made pizzas and bread rolls etc, and they just slide right off, they are honestly fantastic.
  • This is a question for all of the cooks on the forums.

Which are the best pots and pans to buy for general/everyday use?

I have Tefal thermo spot frying pans which I will keep and probably buy again but am in need of a decent sett of saucepans.

I have a gas cooker and have over the years switched from using "teflon" coated pans to stainless steel as I find them alot easier to look after and clean, whereas with the coated ones i have ruined quite a few with using the wrong utensils and soap pads.

I know that you need ones with a decent bottom with having the gas flame underneath.

Are cast iron pans any good?

Can anyone suggest which brands are the best. I am not aversed to spending out on quality as they will last in the long run.

    Many thanks

Our Stellar brand stainless pans are about 15 years old. They get abused, go in the dishwasher etc, but are still like new. They are still available (sometimes under the James Martin brand) at reasonable prices - £100 for a 5 piece set.

For frying we use "cheap as chips" Paella pans.
